ASU Artists Respond

IN RESPONSE to the events of September 11, 2001, a group of artists and others gathered to think of ways to shepherd their complex and continuing feelings into something tangible.

Organized with the help of Patricia Clark, and following the project idea of Karla Elling, and resulting from an original meeting on October 2, 2001, the result is an installation of 21 small granite tiles and three large granite pieces inscribed with words and imagery born of the many tragedies of that day.  The installation is in front of Hayden Library on Arizona State University's Cady Mall.  For more information on the history of this project and its participants, go here: history.  The project has come to fruition exactly one month from the first meeting.

The words and imagery are only part of the installation, however.  The approximately 250 pounds of granite, that weight behind the surfaces, is the rest.

After two weeks in front of Hayden Library, the installation will move to the Galvin Theater in the Nelson Fine Arts Center for an event sponsored by the Herberger College of Fine Arts on December 9, 2001.

Onward now, to whatever is next.
