AFFECTIVE RESPONSE TO GROUP MEMBER CRITICISM

Due Date: 9/26/05
Page Length: 1-2 pages
Points: 2 pts for excellent answers, 1 point for good to adequate answers, 0 points for inadequate responses.
Task: Answer the question posed in class. It is essentially the following. Why do many people tend to have a negative visceral/affective response to individuals [whether they be strangers, acquaintances, friends or even family members] when they criticize a member of a group to which we belong [and the criticizing individual does not] and with which we strongly identify -- even if we may entirely agree with the criticism being made?

 CULTS ASSIGNMENT

Due Date: 10/10/05
Page Length: 1 page
Points: Pass/Fail
Task: Go to Dr. Kelton Rhoads' workingpsychology.com website and read all of the pages and links associated with his discourse on Cults. Here is a link to the first page of that discussion. Print that page [the one to which I just provide the link] and you must STAPLE a TYPED cover page to that page to get credit for the assignment. You will be tested on the information provided on this site in Test II.

MAGAZINE PRINT ADVERTISEMENT ASSIGNMENT

Due Date: 10/31/05
Page Length: Variable
Points: 1 point
Task: Find and neatly cut-out/remove at least one magazine print advertisement which attracts your attention and uses imagery unrelated to the product[s] being promoted. In addition, type out on a separate page the name of the magazine, its month and year of publication, and the product being promoted. You must also STAPLE a TYPED cover page to that page to get credit for the assignment.

PARTNER ABUSE ASSIGNMENT

Due Date: 11/7/05
Page Length: 1 to, no more than, 2 pages.
Points: Pass/Fail
Task: Using at least one of the Theories and Concepts already discussed in class [and select only from those discussed in this class], explain the following. Individuals would not tolerate being hit, yelled at or otherwise mistreated by their partner on a first date. Why then would many individuals tolerate this type of behavior from partners they have gone out with for months, years or even partners they have married? In your explanation of this, please include the names of the Theories and/or Concepts you are invoking as well as how they would account for this odd normative shift. Be succinct. You must also STAPLE a TYPED cover page to your typed paper to get credit for the assignment
