CHM 234, Spring 2012 : Midterm #1, Results (Both Onground and Online/Hybrid Classes)

Scroll to the bottom of this page for regrade instructions!

The results are summarized in the graphs below, which compares them with the scores from the last two times that I taught first semester organic. The results for 2011 were very abnormal, the results for this year are basically the same as 2010 and are similar to what is normally found for the first midterm CHM 234.

For the onground class the peak in the distribution is actually quite high, ca. 170, but the distribution is very broad and tails to the low end. The mean is 123 but the standard deviation is large at ca. 40.

For the online/hybrid class there is no sensible distribution at all, the mean is 107 but the standard deviation (if it is to be believed) is greater than 40. There are a lot of students in the online/hybrid class who did not take my CHM 233 class Fall 2011, in fact 60% of the class. For the regular onground class, the percent who did not take my CHM 233 class Fall 2011 is 24%. Quite a few of you switched from online to onground for this semester.

You can see where this is going, shown below are the distributions comparing this who took my first semester class Fall 2011 versus this who did not. There is no single or simple explanation for the difference between the distributions, but it does go quite some way to explaining the lack of a reasonable distribution for the online class above.

My advice at this point many of you will have heard before. If you really did study hard for this test and didn't do well then we need to talk asap! Thursday evening is a good time to come, especially just after a test. If you know that you just didn't know the reactions or the concepts going into this test then unfortunately you will need to work very hard to catch up now. The class moves fast and we won't be reviewing this material very much again.

You can see your score by clicking HERE FOR THE REGULAR ONGROUND CLASS, and by by clicking HERE FOR THE ONLINE/HYBRID CLASS. As usual, you are identified by your "Posting ID #". Given is your score and your position in class from this who took the test, 332 students in the onground class and 128 student in the online/hybrid class.

If your score in this test was less than 70, then you need to ask yourself whether this semester is the best time for you to take this class, or what strategies are best for you for the rest of the semester. Please come and see me if you can.

Again, if you worked hard for this test and did not do well, then you must feel frustrated. I would too. Again, I encourage you to come and see me as soon as possible to see if we can make sure that doesn't happen again.

Regrades. We all are capable of making mistakes, and if you think that an error has been made in the grading of your test, I encourage you to bring it to my attention. Click HERE for instructions to request a regrade. I will NOT be doing regrades during office hours. Regrade requests must be delivered to me by Monday Feb. 20th at the latest!
