Charles Rennie Mackintosh

Ladderback Chair, for the Hill House, Helensburg, Dunbartonshire, Scotland

1902

Charles Rennie Mackintosh was a Scottish architect and designer, working at the turn of the century, at the tail end of the art nouveau era. His stuff was way beyond art nouveau, however, and presages Bauhaus and Modernism. Many of his designs would be considered to be ultracontemporary even today, and they are now 100 years old! The chair above is from a house he designed and built in 1903 for the publisher Walter W.Blackie.
