Selection Process

The C&C selection team, consisting of clinical staff, current interns, and the Training Director, consider a number of aspects of each application to determine potential fit with our training program. While we do not require prior practicum experience in a university counseling center, the majority of recent interns have had that experience and are seeking a career in a university counseling center environment. The internship is clinically focused, and therefore a strong background in individual and group psychotherapy with clients similar in age and issues to the university client population is highly desirable. Other important factors include: diversity awareness and interest, self awareness, and openness to training. Applicants who most closely match our internship training program criteria will be invited to interview with us by telephone.

Timeline

Receipt of Materials
We will contact applicants by email throughout the process. Our support staff notify applicants by email if an application is incomplete. You will receive an email confirming that your application is complete no later than two weeks after the deadline. You may contact Carla Proby to inquire about receipt of materials.

Applicant Notification
We will contact all applicants by email on December 16, 2005, to notify them of their status (selected for an interview or no longer under consideration).

Visiting C&C
An information meeting will be held on Friday, January 13th at 10 a.m. for applicants who wish to visit the center. During the meeting, available staff and interns will meet with applicants as a group to discuss the training program. Please let us know in advance if you plan to attend.

If you are not able to attend the information meeting, you are welcome to visit at another time. To arrange for a visit, email Julie Savage.

Many applicants wonder if it is necessary to visit a site to indicate interest. At C&C, that is not the case because we understand that applicants have limited time and funds. You are welcome to visit to gain more information about our staff and program. By meeting applicants, C&C staff may learn more about an applicant’s potential fit with the training program.

Interviews
Applicants selected for telephone interviews will be contacted by email on December 16, 2005. If you are traveling during that time and do not have access to email, please provide us with a telephone number where you can be reached.

Since most applicants have limited travel budgets, we conduct all interviews by telephone to insure equity in the interview process. Telephone interviews will take place during the first week and ½ of January. Interviews last 45 minutes and are conducted by teams of staff and interns. The questions will focus on clinical interests, clinical skills, and fit with our program.

Contact With Staff and Interns
We welcome contact from prospective applicants. We want to provide as much information as possible to aid in your evaluation of our program. Please feel free to contact Julie Savage, Training Director by email jsavage@asu.edu or by telephone (480-965-6146). You are welcome to contact clinical staff and interns. The easiest way to make contact is to email your request to Julie Savage. Your request will be given to the appropriate staff or an intern. The staff member or intern will then contact you.
