Simple Five Minute Relaxation Tips

Relaxation is the natural antidote to stress. Taking a few minutes to refresh your mind and body can help turn a stressful situation into one that is much more manageable. Follow the steps below to get to your island of peace and calm…

1. Sit upright in a comfortable chair. Have a good stretch. Then, let your shoulders and arms relax. Close your eyes. Ease the tension in your scalp, forehead, jaw, and neck. Relax your chest, arms, lower back, thighs, and knees. Feel the tension leave in your calves, feet, and finally, your toes.

2. Breathe deeply from your stomach. Allow your abdomen to rise and fall as you breathe, not your chest.

3. Imagine a special place that is peaceful. Think about how it smells, looks, sounds, and feels.

4. Imagine yourself completely relaxed in your special place as you continue to breathe slowly and deeply.

5. When you are ready, slowly come back to the present moment. Open your eyes and continue your day feeling a bit more relaxed.

“Do not underestimate the delight of real simplicity in your lifestyle.”
--Hans Selye, Stress without Distress, 1974.
