Culturally Adjusting to ASU

The experience of attending college is usually both exciting and stressful. Students face the challenge of addressing academic and personal concerns in an environment that is new and unfamiliar. This is why the counselors at Counseling & Consultation (C&C) want to offer their assistance while you study at ASU.

Initially, many students come to ASU with hopes and dreams about their experiences, and reality often matches those dreams. Sometimes, though, students' experiences fall short of their hopes. Depending on students' cultural background and prior experiences with environments similar to ASU, adjusting to life here might present some challenges. Some students may experience the environment as not welcoming; others may struggle with language differences; still others may experience physical and mobility problems. These struggles can make "fitting in" a more difficult experience for students and can affect their academic performance. Below are some typical challenges students face in trying to "fit in:"

  • Personal and interpersonal concerns
  • Relating to peers, roommates, and faculty
  • Separating from family and friends
  • Finding that one's funds are not sufficient
  • Learning to deal with new behaviors and attitudes
  • Adjusting to a new educational environment
  • Finding that others may not understand people from diverse cultures/backgrounds
  • Struggling with connecting to people who are not culturally similar

How can C&C help?
Counseling offers you the opportunity to explore your personal concerns. The counselors at C&C are sensitive to the needs of multicultural students. Talking with a professional counselor in a confidential, safe, and supportive setting may help you clarify issues and discover new ways of dealing with them. Counselors are aware that it may be difficult at first to discuss personal problems with a stranger. Generally, these difficulties diminish once students begin to trust their counselor.

We offer an open invitation to talk about:
  • Your cultural background
  • Concerns unique to your culture
  • Racism, Sexism, Heterosexism, Ageism, etc.
  • Hopes, dreams, and ambitions
  • Discrimination
  • Cultural heritage and pride
  • Feelings of anger when being left out or ignored
  • Balancing your needs with your culture's expectations
  • Ways to deal with the dominant culture
  • Any emotional, personal or interpersonal issues

Services are available to all students and all conversations are confidential. C&C does not release information about a student without that student's written permission, except in the case of imminent danger to self or others, child/adult abuse, court order, or where otherwise required by law. Notations of counseling are not a part of a student's university record.
