Overview of
Counseling and Consultation Services
Mission Statement
Counseling and Consultation (C&C) at Arizona State University is a unit in the Division of Student Affairs that works in collaboration with the broader university community to support the academic mission of the university by engaging in activities that facilitate the student learning experience, student success in persistence and graduation, and efficiency and effectiveness of student services. C&C in its delivery of high quality psychological services, actively works to model and to promote the valuing of human differences on individual, organizational, and community levels, and the facilitation of human potential.
Counseling and Consultation at Arizona State University has identified four major goals for the work of this administrative unit.
1. To facilitate student development through the implementation of direct and indirect psychological and psychiatric services, including assessment, counseling, crisis response, consultation, outreach, and program evaluation, which are effective and appropriate to the missions of the University and the Division of Student Affairs.
2. To provide effective training for graduate students in psychology and closely related fields.
3. To enhance and promote the valuing of diversity through actions that reflect an understanding of and respect for differences and similarities.
4. To intentionally contribute to staff development in support of high quality service delivery and to the development of the field through staff professional activities.
Counseling Services
C&C provides: crisis intervention, individual therapy, couples therapy, and group psychotherapy. C&C has an active group therapy and structured skills workshop program. Among the current therapy group offerings are: Women’s Experiences, Adult Children of Alcoholics, Gay/Bisexual/Transgender Men’s Interpersonal, Eating Disorders, Compulsive Overeaters, Lesbian/Bisexual/Transgender Interpersonal, and the Interpersonal Relationships group. Skill group offerings include: Clean and Sober, 10 Days to Feeling Good, Overcoming Shyness, Graduate Student Support, Anger Resolution, and First Steps in Woman’s Healing from Sexual Assault/Abuse. Group offerings vary according to clinical need. Of the clients seen at C&C in 2004, 11% were Latino(a), 3% were Asian American, 4% were African American, 2% were Native American, and 5% were international students, which is representative of the diversity of the larger ASU student body.

Consultation and Outreach Services
Counseling and Consultation has consulting and liaison relationships with a number of agencies on campus, including Residential Life, Lesbian/Gay Academic Union, Disability Resources for Students, Department of Public Safety, Intercollegiate Athletics, Career Services, and other Student Affairs offices. Staff provide mental health consultation, and campus lectures, workshops, and presentations on a wide variety of topics.
