Study: gender gap in wages of nonprofit directors

A study of nonprofit executives' salaries, which includes Pima County for the first time, found a gender gap here, with women executive directors paid about 20 percent less than men.

The 2007 study by Arizona State University's Center for Nonprofit Leadership & Management reviewed wages and benefits for all categories of workers at nonprofits in Maricopa and Pima counties.

Statewide, the disparity in top-level pay between men and women grows as the organization's budget grows. Nonprofits operating with more than $10 million in assets pay male executive directors an average of $51,000 more per year than a woman in the same job: $111,772 for women, $162,375 for men.

But the ASU report shows that at nonprofits with assets between $500,000 and $1 million, women executives outpace men.

Women executive directors at such organizations were paid an average of $69,883 compared to $57,927 for men.

The head of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Tucson, who is a woman, is among the higher-paid directors of Tucson nonprofits in that category.

In 2005, the most recent year for which figures are available, that CEO was paid $99,885. The nonprofit's assets were $783,000.

Among the highest-paid nonprofit executives in Tucson is the male head of the Muscular Dystrophy Association, which has its headquarters here but is a national organization. In 2005, that job paid $365,000. A more current figure was not available.

The report does not identify by name the 221 nonprofits that took part in the ASU study, which gathered data at the end of 2006 and beginning of 2007.

The report showed that nonprofit CEO salaries in Maricopa County averaged about 14 percent more than in Pima County, $90,151 there compared to $77,300 here. That disparity tended to carry through for all jobs. For instance, directors of volunteers at nonprofits in Maricopa County were paid a median salary of $46,000 but in Pima County they were paid $29,000.

The study includes compensation information for 8,375 employees in 82 different job positions, from chief executive officer to caseworker, attorney, director of program services, registered nurse, custodian and public relations-marketing manager.

ASU's nonprofits compensation study is done every three years.
