ASU partners with Tucson United Way on $500,000 Federal grant

Nonprofit center to help faith-based and community organizations build capacity

PHOENIX – The Arizona State University Center for Nonprofit Leadership and Management joined with the Governor's Office on Faith and Community Initiatives and the Department of Economic Security in a collaborative effort spearheaded by the United Way of Tucson and Southern Arizona.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced Friday awards for the Compassion Capital Fund (CCF) Demonstration Program totaling $5 million for ten organizations. These groups will serve as intermediaries to help build the capacity of smaller faith-based and community organizations.

The United Way of Tucson and Southern Arizona is one of the ten organizations receiving $500,000 which will be subcontracted to ASU and the other partners, including consulting firm LeCroy & Milligan. The money is targeted to help grass-roots faith-based and community organizations enhance their ability to provide a wide range of social services.

“Our mission is to build the capacity of the social sector by enhancing the effectiveness of those who lead, manage and support nonprofit organizations,” says Robert Ashcraft, director of the ASU Center for Nonprofit Leadership and Management. “This grant gives us the opportunity to widen our reach across the region in providing knowledge and tools for organizational effectiveness, and ultimately better delivery of services to those in need.”

Under the grant, ASU's Center for Nonprofit Leadership and Management will help participating organizations by developing individualized plans to build their capacity through leadership development, organizational development, program development, revenue development strategies, and community engagement. The Center will also provide training workshops on these areas of development around the state, in coordination with the other partners.

The Arizona State University's Center for Nonprofit Leadership and Management (CNLM) is recognized as a national leader in undergraduate and graduate nonprofit education. The Center exists to enhance the quality of life in communities through the advancement of nonprofit leadership practices. CNLM has several program offerings which have built the capacity of nonprofit organizations, nonprofit professionals, board members, and volunteers by offering a variety of capacity building workshops, conferences, classes and programs.
