This course provides students with a grounding in the historical and philosophical foundations of the nonprofit sector in American society; students identify and study issues and trends related to governance and delivery systems of the nonprofit sector.

Volunteer and Human Resource Management for Nonprofit Organizations

Students will gain an understanding of human resource theories and tools to determine roles, evaluate responsibilities, and lead staff toward optimal performance. It will improve supervisory, management, and leadership skills.

 

Nonprofit Leadership and Ethics

This course will examine leadership and ethical questions encountered by managers and leaders in the management of nonprofit organizations. The course will combine the study of leadership and ethical principles through the examination of case studies of problems in the management of nonprofit organizations.

 

Intersecting Sectors – Nonprofit, Public and Private

This course provides students with a conceptual framework and the practical skills for analyzing the inter-relationship of three economic sectors: nonprofit, for-profit, and government. The course examines issues directly affecting the strength and vulnerabilities of the nonprofit sector through case studies that lead to cross-sector understanding of challenges and opportunities.

 

Capstone: Critical Issues Facing Nonprofits

Students identify and review key issues confronting the nonprofit sector, while integrating learning from the entire program. This course will allow students to synthesize, analyze and prepare for entry/reentry into the nonprofit sector.

Program Evaluation and Information Management

This course provides the tools to design and conduct practical program evaluation research in today's nonprofit organizations. In addition, it provides an extensive overview of information technology resources (e.g., excel, access, & SPSS) to manage and analyze information. Students will select an individualized project and design a program evaluation specific to their organization.

This course examines issues confronting nonprofit organizations related to fundraising and philanthropic purposes in society. Students will learn fund raising strategies such as conducting annual campaigns and developing individual donors.

This course explores social innovation for the common good and business concepts and skills related to earned income and innovation in nonprofits.

 

Arts and Public Policy

This course will focus on the relationship of government to the arts in the United States . Among the topics to be considered are the following: controversies surrounding government's relationship to the arts, the history of the relationship, government patronage of the arts, arts in public places, and local issues.

 

Program Evaluation
NLM 598


Students will learn program evaluation methodologies through team projects in local nonprofits. Students participate initially in a three-day intensive training and then are assigned to groups to conduct evaluation projects. The class reconvenes to discuss advanced topics in program evaluation and for formal group presentations. Prerequisite: PAF 501 or instructor approval.
