15th Annual Conference on Sustainability Strategies

Mission and Messaging: Cutting Through the Noise

Over 300 leaders in the sector attended the 15th Annual Nonprofit Conference on Sustainability Strategies, Mission and Messaging: Cutting Through the Noise , Nov. 29-30, 2007.

  • The conference featured national speakers Chuck Gould, Executive Director and CEO of Volunteers of America in Washington , D.C. , and Joselyn Zivin, Vice President of Lipman Hearne in Chicago .  
  • Attendees participated in 15 workshops focusing on nonprofit marketing, communications and public relations.
  • Following lunch, a panel of local media experts answered questions from attendees, including how to pitch the media, what makes a good story, and how the media and nonprofits can work together.
  • Dave Sherman of Connection Pros gave a lively, interactive closing address on how to elevate your elevator speech: sharing what you do in 30 seconds or less.

Speaker: Chuck Gould

Charles W. (Chuck) Gould serves as national president and chief executive officer of Volunteers of America, overseeing the organization, which is headquartered in Washington, D.C., and its more than 15,000 employees and 95,000 volunteers across 45 states. With combined revenues of more than $850 million, and programs that help nearly 2 million people in more than 400 communities, the organization continues to grow.

Chuck was recently named to the Nonprofit Times 2007 Power and Influence Top 50, celebrating some of the sector’s top executives and thinkers. Gould is a graduate of the University of Minnesota Law School and a member of the Minnesota, District of Columbia, and Colorado State bars. He serves as Chairman of the ASAE Key Philanthropic Organization Committee; on the board of directors and was previously chairman of the National Human Services Assembly; on the board of directors of the National Affordable Housing Trust; and on the board of directors for the American Association of Home and Services for the Aging.

Dave is a professional icebreaker for Connection Pros, an organization that inspires people to be more comfortable, more confident and more successful when creating and developing relationships with others.

Before becoming a professional speaker and trainer, Dave built a successful retail sports apparel business. As the owner and founder of The Cap Company, Arizona's Largest Cap Store, Dave was named a Top Ten Small Business Person of the Year by the Phoenix Chamber of Commerce, a Top Five Small Business Person of the Year by the Tempe Chamber of Commerce, as well as receiving the national Mass Mutual Blue Chip Award for Small Business Excellence.

Dave holds a marketing degree from Arizona State University, with an emphasis in advertising.

Speaker: Joselyn Zivin, Ph.D

Senior Vice President Joselyn Zivin directs major institutional branding accounts at Lipman Hearne, primarily in the higher education sector. She is responsible for leading client teams through all stages of such engagements, from market analysis and research, to strategy formulation, to marketing planning and execution.

Joselyn has presented at national conferences including the American Marketing Association Non-Profit Symposium, the annual meeting of the American Society of Association Executives, and CASE V, and has led numerous workshops on nonprofit branding and marketing.

Joselyn holds a B.A. from the University of Chicago and earned her M.A. and Ph.D. in history from Duke University. She was a member of the history faculty at Drake University. She still loves to teach and learn together with her clients.
