Deborah Hechinger

Deborah S. Hechinger is the president and CEO of BoardSource and a BoardSource senior consultant.

Debbie joined BoardSource in October 2003, after serving as executive vice president of the World Wildlife Fund, a large, international conservation organization where she was responsible for all fundraising, communication, and operations activities.  Prior to joining the World Wildlife Fund in 1994, Debbie was Deputy Comptroller and Director of Securities and Corporate Practices Division at the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency and held senior executive positions in the Division of Enforcement at the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Most recently, Debbie has spoken at numerous conferences for groups such as the Common Fund, the Association of Fundraising Professionals, the Council on Foundations, Independent Sector, the North Carolina Center for Nonprofits, the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, Grantmakers in Health, and Volunteers of America.

Debbie also serves as a co-convener of the Governance and Fiduciary Responsibilities work group, one of five task force groups comprised under the Panel on the Nonprofit Sector.  That National Panel was formed by Independent Sector to make recommendations to the Senate Finance Committee on ways to improve the oversight and governance of charitable organizations.

In addition to her extensive national and international experience, Debbie also has held key leadership positions on the boards of Sidwell Friends School and the Children's National Medical Center , and has served on the boards of the Washington Scholarship Fund and the Black Student Fund.  Debbie received a B.A. from Brown University and a J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center . She is currently a member in good standing of the District of Columbia Bar. 

Jan Masaoka  

Jan Masaoka is Executive Director of CompassPoint Nonprofit Services in California , one of the nation's leading management consulting and training firms for nonprofits. Ms. Masaoka consults with nonprofit organizations in financial systems, program evaluation, and boards of directors.  She authored All Hands On Board, an introduction to board service, and she writes the Board Café, a national newsletter with 39,000 subscribers. Her research work includes recent studies on executive director tenure, all-volunteer organizations, and nonprofit space and occupancy needs.  For the last six years she has been named by The NonProfit Times as one of the “50 Most Influential People” in the nonprofit sector and was named NonProfit Times Executive of the Year for 2002. Ms. Masaoka is board chair of the Asian Pacific Islander Wellness Center and board member of the San Francisco Foundation Community Initiative Funds.

Kay Sprinkel Grace  

Kay Sprinkel Grace, CFRE, is a San Francisco-based organizational consultant, providing workshops and consultation to local, regional, national and international organizations in strategic planning, case and board development, staff development, and other issues related to leadership of the fund raising process. Prior to starting her own firm in 1987, she was a staff development officer for nearly a decade serving several organizations. She has been a member of the faculty of The Fund Raising School (Indiana University Center on Philanthropy) since 1980. Prior to her career in nonprofit development, she was a print and television journalist and an educator. Her current major contract is as principal external consultant to the Corporation for Public Broadcasting's Major Giving Initiative. 114 public television licensees will participate in the program, which began in March, 2004, and concludes in June, 2006.

She is the author of five books. Beyond Fund Raising: New Strategies for Nonprofit Innovation and Investment (John P. Wiley, 1997; second edition, 2005); High Impact Philanthropy: How Donors, Boards, and Nonprofit Organizations Can Transform Communities, co-author, with Alan Wendroff (John P. Wiley, 2001); Over Goal! What You Must Know to Excel at Fundraising Today (Emerson & Church, 2003); The Ultimate Board Member's Book (Emerson & Church, 2003); Fundraising Mistakes That Bedevil All Boards (Emerson & Church, 2004); and of the booklet, The Board's Role in Setting and Advancing the Mission (Board Source, 2003). She is a regular columnist for the bi-monthly publication, Contributions and has contributed chapters to several books including both editions of Achieving Excellence in Fund Raising by Henry A. Rosso and Associates (1987 and 2003), Taking Fund Raising Seriously, and Taking Trusteeship Seriously.

Melanie Herman

Melanie Herman serves as Executive Director of the Nonprofit Risk Management Center, a Washington-based resource center serving the nonprofit community (www.nonprofitrisk.org).  The Center provides training, technical assistance and informational resources on a wide range of topics, including risk management, liability, employment practices, accountability, insurance, and child abuse prevention.  Melanie has spent her entire career in the nonprofit sector and has authored and co-authored more than 15 books covering a wide spectrum of risk management issues.  Each year she delivers numerous workshops, seminars and keynote presentations on risk management, liability and insurance topics.  Her most recent books are Pillars of Accountability: A Risk Management Guide for Nonprofit Boards (2004), and Playing to Win: A Risk Management Guide for Nonprofit Sports and Recreation Programs (2004).  Melanie earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Urban Affairs from the American University (Washington, DC) and a Juris Doctor from George Mason University (Arlington, VA).  She is a member of the District of Columbia Bar.
