Keynote Speaker:

Omowale Satterwhite, Ph.D., Founder & senior advisor, National Community Development Institute

Frank J. Omowale Satterwhite is a community-builder who completed an undergraduate degree at Howard University, a Master's Degree at Southern Illinois University and a doctoral degree at Stanford University.

Omowale founded the National Community Development Institute in Oakland, California where he now serves as a Senior Advisor to the President.  NCDI is a non-profit, technical support center whose mission is to build capacity for social change in communities of color and other underserved communities in a culturally-based way. 

Omowale was previously employed as Associate Director, Western Regional Office, College Entrance Examination Board; Associate Dean and Chairman of African American Studies, Oberlin College; Assistant to the Superintendent and Acting Superintendent, Ravenswood City School District; President, Institute for the Study of Community Economic Development; and President, Community Development Institute which he founded in 1979.

In a typical year, Omowale provides management services to 75 social justice, health/ human service and community-building organizations; he conducts training programs for consultants working in communities of color; and he helps design and implement community building initiatives in cities around the country.  During the past 25 years, he has assisted more than 1,100 organizations in 85 cities and 40 states.

Omowale is the former Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Alliance for Nonprofit Management, headquartered in Washington, D.C.  He has served on the Board of Directors of the Applied Research Center and Urban Habitat ( Oakland, CA); Community Development Institute, Girl’s Club of the Mid-Peninsula, and Teen Home ( East Palo Alto, CA); and Praxis Project ( Washington, D.C.).  He has also served on the East Palo Alto City Council and the San Mateo County Planning Commission.

During his career, Omowale has been honored with numerous professional and civic awards including the Unsung Hero Award by KQED Public Television in San Francisco, Person of the Year Award by the Peninsula Community Foundation, and Community Service Award by the National Council of Negro Women, Golden Gate Section.  In 2005, NCDI, under Omowale’s leadership, was given a national “Leadership in Action” award by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation.


"The Local Experience" Panelists:

Cara Chaney, Director of Community Services, Valle del Sol
Panelist
Cara Chaney has a B.A. from the University of Southern California and over 10 years experience working in the social work field. Four years have been dedicated to the research of evidence-based programs and evaluation of national welfare reform. She has worked in a multitude of social service settings including foster care and adoption, domestic violence, residential care, the Regional Behavioral Health Authority and Prevention services. She has been the Director of Community Services at Valle del Sol for three years. Cara presented findings of research-based programs at the National Council of La Raza Conference in 2007 and 2008. She also acts as Valle del Sol's Cultural Competence Liaison responsible for agency and community wide cultural competence efforts.

Marion K. Kelly, Director, Office of Community Affairs, Mayo Clinic
Moderator
Marion provides leadership for Mayo Clinic's efforts to build solid neighbor, civic and corporate relationships for the entire Southwest region of the United States. He is also responsible for institutionalizing "Diversity" as a corporate objective within the strategic plan of Mayo Clinic. Marion's broad experience spans teaching elementary education, working in the United States Senate, Indiana University School of Medicine Administration and Mayo Medical School. He was an appointee in the former Bush White House administration as Special Assistant for At Risk Youth Initiatives at the United States Department of Labor, and as the White House Liaison for the Labor Department. Marion holds degrees from Kentucky State University and University of Kentucky. He has completed graduate coursework toward a Ph.D. at Indiana University in Behavioral Science.

Essen Otu, Diversity & Cultural Competency Director, Mountain park Health Center
Panelist
Essen Otu, as Diversity & Cultural Competency Director for Mountain Park Health Center (MPHC), is responsible for initiating and developing internal and external diversity strategies as well as ensuring that the organization has a clear, consistent, and effective cultural competency plan ultimately geared at providing the best possible service at all five of MPHC's Clinics. Prior to his role at MPHC, Essen served as the Special Assistant to Seattle City Light (SCL) Superintendent, Jorge Carrasco in Seattle, Washington while completing his Master's degree in Public Administration through the prestigious National Urban Fellows Program. Essen also served in the Office of the Honorable Governor Janet Napolitano, where he received special recognition for leading the efforts in developing the first Cultural Competency Plan and training within the Governor's Office.

Phil Pangrazio, Executive Director, Arizona Bridge to Independent Living
Panelist
Phil Pangrazio is the Executive Director of the Arizona Bridge to Independent Living (ABIL), one of the largest Center's for Independent Living in the United States. He oversees a wide array of programs designed to empower people with disabilities to achieve or maintain independent lifestyles within the community, including the planning, construction and financing of the Disability Empowerment Center of Arizona that opened in October of 2008. This has become shared office space for ABIL and 10 other nonprofit organizations devoted to serving persons with disabilities. Prior to his post with ABIL, he was employed for 10 years at Maricopa Integrated Health System and Maricopa Medical Center where he held several positions in hospital financial management and administration. As a quadriplegic and wheelchair user for over 30 years, Phil is a knowledgeable source on an array of topics pertaining to the disability community and independent living philosophy. Phil holds a master's degree in Health Services Administration and Policy from Arizona State University.

Barbara Poley, Executive Director, The Hopi Foundation
Panelist
Barbara Poley, Hopi /Laguna, serves as the Executive Director of The Hopi Foundation, a nonprofit corporation established by local Hopi people to promote self sufficiency, proactive community participation in their own destiny, self reliance and local self determination. Barbara is a member of the Bear Clan and is from the Hopi village of Bacavi. Prior to her work with the Hopi Foundation, she served as Staff Assistant to the Office of the Chairman of the Hopi Tribe. Other positions include management positions with the Hopi Tribe Department of Education, Loololma's Plaza, a private business, and Native Americans for Community Action, an urban nonprofit human service agency. She has urban, rural and reservation grassroots community experience as well as professional experience with diverse communities. She holds a bachelor's degree in Business Administration and a master's degree in Education.

Carol A. Poore, President and CEO, Southwest Center for HIV/AIDS

Carol A. Poore is President and CEO of Southwest Center for HIV/AIDS, a nonprofit HIV/AIDS research, clinical trial and education resource center based in Phoenix. Prior to her role at Southwest Center, Carol served as Vice Provost of Public Affairs at Arizona State University's West campus, senior administrator at ASU's West campus from 2002 to 2007, and Director of Communication for New West Energy, a separate affiliate of Salt River Project (SRP), from 1997 to 2002. Carol earned her (MBA) from Arizona State University as a member of the Executive MBA Program, and holds a B.S. in Television Production, Broadcasting and Journalism from ASU. She currently is a doctoral candidate completing her Ph.D. in Public Administration at ASU.
