To create an email account for your club, send a request to: email-q@asu.edu. Request a mailbox name that is 5-8 characters long and an alternate name just in case your first choice is not available. (i.e. ASIA@asu.edu or AsiaStudies@asu.edu) The Email request also needs to contain the names, email, ASU ID number or ASURITE of both the person who will act as the primary contact or owner of the mailbox and a secondary contact. This is usually the Club Advisor and a student. Email-Q@asu.edu will contact the owner of the mailbox after it has been created.

After submitting a request, you will be notified by the SORC webmaster within 2 weeks confirming your new webmaster.

How to Transfer Files

Choose one of the following methods to upload your files using either an FTP client or the ASU Emma E-mail system. A downloadable version of an FTP client is available for your use if you use it for educational purposes.

SSH to transfer Files

Are you using FTP to transfer your files?
Some of the common FTP programs like WS_FTP won't work any more with ASU server, because of security regulations. One of the alternative options is to use SSH - Secure File Transfer. Remember that this copy is free and can be downloaded from the ASU website at http://www.asu.edu/security/software/html/ssh/index.htm.

HOW TO DOWNLOAD AND INSTALL SSH : Secure Shell File Transfer Client

  1. Go to http://www.asu.edu/security/software/html/ssh/index.htm.
  2. Click on the "Download" tab at the top of the table. You will be asked to login with your ASURITE UserID and password before downloading software.
  3. Click on the version of the SSH software you will need (depending on operating system).
  4. Click "Save" and select your desktop as the location to save the file.
  5. Double-click on the installation file. Follow the instructions and install the SSH client.

HOW TO ACCESS AND TRANSFER FILES from your student organization webspace

  1. Open Secure File Transfer Client from the start menu, and you will get this window displayed.
  2. Click on Quick Connect (at the top left on your screen). Enter the host name as general.asu.edu and username will be your ASURITE id
  3. Now click on connect and enter your password and you will get the following window, which will indicate your M drive space.
  4. Click on Operation tab (in the top) and click on Go to Folder
  5. Change the folder name to your organization AFS space location, and click OK
  6. Now you can see your files in your student organization webspace. You can upload and download multiple files using the arrow keys on the top. You can even drag and drop files on to your server space.

To Transfer Files Using Emma

You can also use emma, ASU's e-mail system to transfer your files and update your organization's webpage.
  1. Log on to Emma, and then enter your ASURITE ID and password.
  2. Once inside look on the left hand display and choose the "AFS Manager" option.
  3. Under the heading "Current Directory" should appear your personal space on the ASU public server. Change that "Current Directory" to the following...
    /afs/asu.edu/www/studentprgms/orgs/your_organization_folder

Then click the open folder button located on the right. Then you should be in your groups designated folder.

Note: Only persons using authorized ASURITE ID's can access a groups folder. Access is granted through the SORC office if requests are made in person or via the online Webmaster Access Form on this site.
  4. Once inside your group's directory, you can upload files by clicking the "Upload" icon which will take you to this screen, then all you have to do is click the "browse" button, find the file from your computer that you wish to upload, and then press the "upload" button on the left.

You can also delete or move files by checking the box next to the file's name and then clicking the "Delete" or "Move" icons respectively.
Your web address (URL) will be...
http://www.asu.edu/clubs/your_organization_folder

Your directory (location on ASU's web server) will be...
/afs/asu.edu/www/studentprgms/orgs/your_organization_folder

This should get you through the rest of the process. If you have any other questions please contact the SORC office.
