Membership Materials
All certificates, pins, and Forum magazines not claimed at induction ceremonies are kept at the club coordinator's office (Tempe campus Stauffer Hall 419) and are available for pick-up by appointment. Contact the club coordinator to schedule a time to pick-up your membership materials. Stop by and get your items!
If you study at the West, Polytechnic, or Downtown campuses, and would find it easier to pick-up your materials there, please contact the club coordinator to arrange for pick-up there. (We will have them sent to the campus, and let you know where to find them).
Graduation Honor Items
Members can walk with pride at graduation ceremonies, indicating their PES and/or ALD memberships and thereby their academic performance, through our honor cords and medallions. (Shown in the photos below.) Students have worn either or both, instead of and/or along with their other honor items (other cords, stoles, etc).
These items are available for $10 each. We have items on hand for immediate purchase at the annual induction ceremony, and try to keep a good supply on hand throughout the year. We also do special orders for fall and spring graduations.
Reserve yours at least one month before you graduate (to make sure we have or can order enough), and/or stop by the office to purchase (cash or check/money order payable to "PES/ALD"). Unless reserved in advance, the items are first come, first serve.

Family & Friends
Recognize your scholar with the one or more of these symbols of excellence. Pick them up at the induction ceremony, or order one from the chapter! The items can be picked up by or mailed to you or your student. We can also include a gift note.
Members of other chapters
While ALD items can be purchased directly from the national office, PES cords and medallions are only available through chapters. We are happy to assist PES members whose home chapters, for whatever reason, do not offer PES graduation honor items.**
We do require some confirmation that you are, in fact, a PES member. An e-mail from your chapter advisor, or a copy or scanned photo of your national membership certificate would be fine. Scans can be emailed and/or copies faxed (480.965.4291 ATTN: Thomas Walker). (This requirement is to confirm all out-of-chapter requests, as we do not have access to other chapters' membership lists.)
Please be sure to provide all information in time for us to ship the items to you for your ceremonies!
**Please note that some chapters reserve honor items for members who have been especially active with or made significant contributions to their chapter, campus and/or the Society at large. We ask that members of these chapters respect the special significance of these items at your school, and work to earn them as appropriate for your chapter.
To reserve/order
To ensure your desired items are available for you, please complete the Honor Item Order Form and return with payment to our mailing address (at page bottom). We will contact you when your items are available or being shipped to you.
Ordering notes
- We will confirm membership (and therefore eligibility) on all orders.
- Payment (cash, money order or check) is required before items are released.
- Items can be picked up at our club coordinator's office at per item cost, or shipped through US Mail for an additional cost.
Other Phi Eta Sigma - Alpha Lambda Delta merchandise
The national societies also offers a variety of other items for direct purchase from their offices. Shirts, jackets, plaques, watches and other collectible items make great gifts of encouragement and congratulations. Visit the PES store and the ALD store for the available items and ordering information.

The local chapter is also raising funds to establish a local scholarship(s) through the ASU Foundation, an independent 501(c) 3 non-profit organization that exists to support ASU. To donate, please contact the chapter Treasurer.

In order to see what degree of involvement and excellence has been awarded in the past, applicants are encouraged to review biographies of previous winners on the respective national web sites and in the PES national Forum magazine and the ALD national Flame magazine, the most recent editions of which are available for FREE in the club coordinator's office.
Selection Criteria
The Chapter's nominee selection committees use the same criteria as the respective national committees, in order to forward the most competitive ASU candidates. Applicants should review the instructions on the national application forms, and be sure that responses and recommendations speak clearly to them.
| Phi Eta Sigma National Criteria | Alpha Lambda Delta National Criteria |
|
|
Because chapter involvement is a consideration in all processes, participating in chapter activities is important in making our members as competitive as possible! This also typically means that members inducted in the fall will not have had sufficient time in the chapter to establish a strong record of involvement and leadership by the following spring. These new members are encouraged to wait until their second or later years of membership, and to serve on scholarship nominee selection and other committees in the meanwhile, to build their records.
Local Selection Process
To apply for an undergraduate award:
1. Review the scholarship criteria for the scholarship(s) that interest you (particularly any GPA minimum!).
2. Download an application above.
3. Submit a complete local application packet (see explanation below) to the club coordinator's office by the deadline. Do NOT send undergraduate applications directly to the national office.
A complete local application packet consists of the following:
- a completed application form (including attached essay for ALD)
- one official academic transcript from ASU (not an "advising" or "unofficial" copy)
- letters of recommendation (up to three are optional for PES awards; two are required for ALD)
4. The ASU Chapter selection committee will meet to select the chapter nominees from among the complete local applications based on the national criteria.
5. The selected ASU nominees will provide a photograph* and prepare additional copies of their application materials, and these will be forwarded to the national scholarship committee for the national competition.
NOTE: Applications to and/or nomination by the ASU Chapter does NOT guarantee any award by either the local chapter or the national society. Local selection is merely for a place in the national competition.
*The selected nominees will be required to submit one physical, portrait photograph (an appropriate headshot) suitable for printing in national hardcopy and web publications. This photograph will be for the editor's use only, and will NOT be included in the scholarship committee evaluation materials.
Local Scholarship
The ASU chapter is currently fundraising to create its own, locally-managed scholarship(s) to provide even more support to our members. Our current amount raised is posted below; we need $10,000 in the bank to begin making awards.
| ASU Chapter Local Scholarship Fund
$6,226.99 as of July 1, 2007 |
Members are asked to participate in chapter fundraising efforts (watch the chapter listserv and calendar for details).
Direct donations are also gladly accepted to help us reach our goal! Contact the chapter Treasurer for more information on how you can help!
Chapter Nominee Selections Committee
Each year members NOT applying for the scholarship are asked to serve on the chapter's Nominee Selection Committee. These members review the applications and select the most competitive to be our nominees in the national process.
If you are interested in serving on the committee, please contact the club coordinator. We will work with interested members to arrange review and deliberation times during late February.

Participation Points
What are points?
Points are the newest way our chapter is rewarding our members for their outstanding participation. The member who's chapter involvement has earned the most points at the end of the academic year will be rewarded with a fabulous prize, yet to be decided, but you know it will be great! (Sorry, points are not redeemable for cash.)
How can you get points?
It's easy! For every chapter activity you attend, assist with and/or bring folks along to, you'll log participation points. The breakdown of points is below.
| Points value | For the following involvement |
| 3 | Participation in a PES/ALD-listed service event |
| 2 | PES/ALD chapter meeting or social attended |
| 1 | Per friend you bring along to PES/ALD service or fundraising event |
Meeting points will be logged from the sign-in sheet. Service event participation will be logged by the PES/ALD leader at full-chapter functions OR reported by members by e-mail for individual events listed on the Chapter site.
What do I get for points?
Members who meet the minimum threshold for the year (12 points) will be recognized as "Active Members" of the chapter. This recognition is above and beyond the membership earned through academics, and provides an additional indication of activity and commitment on your resume, school/employment applications and scholarship packet.
Are service projects other than those on the web site eligible for points?
Sorry, only Phi Eta Sigma - Alpha Lambda Delta listed projects are eligible for points. (We have no real means of tracking the many, many worthy projects that are out there, and we want all members to have equal access to the opportunities, so we're limiting points to those events all members can find on our chapter web site)
If you have a project you would like to have added to the list of service projects PES/ALD members can participate in, please contact our vice-president with the details of the project and we'll see what we can do!
We are just beginning this motivational program; so let us know what suggestions and questions you have for points, prizes and/or this FAQ section.
Other Service Opportunities
Please contact our Vice-President and Volunteer Committee Chair with any great volunteer ideas.

How do the Phi Eta Sigma - Alpha Lambda Delta scholarships work?
Combined, Phi Eta Sigma and Alpha Lambda Delta offer more than $340,000 each year in scholarships, selecting from among nominees made by local chapters. For details on the national awards, visit www.phietasigma.org/scholarships.htm and www.nationalald.org/ALD2005/finaid.asp.
The ASU chapter selection process begins in late January for monies for the following school year. Details are sent out through the chapter listserv each January; past processes are described above in the Scholarship section.
In addition to the national process, the ASU chapter is currently building an endowment to offer local scholarships as well. Donations are always welcome.
In addition to the graduation honor items, what other Phi Eta Sigma - Alpha Lambda Delta merchandise is available?
The national offices offer a variety of other PES and ALD membership items for direct purchase from them. Ask the club coordinator for a brochure or visit www.phietasigma.org/on-line_shopping.htm and www.aldstore.org for the available items and ordering information.
My e-mail or other contact information have changed. How do I update my Phi Eta Sigma - Alpha Lambda Delta chapter listserv subscription?
You can e-mail the Secretary with your name, old address and new address and we'll update you.
I missed my induction ceremony; can I attend one in the future?
All current members are invited to attend the annual induction ceremony to help welcome new members. With advance notice to the advisor, we can arrange for members from previous years to participate as an inductee (to receive his/her materials) with the current year's new members.
Listserv info
The chapter maintains a private and moderated e-mail listserv, PESIGMA at asu.edu, in order to communicate with our members. Members are subscribed at the e-mail address provided on their membership form, and received occasional messages about chapter events, opportunities and other items of potential interest. To protect our members from unsolicited e-mails, only subscribed members can post and all messages are moderated (checked by the club coordinator or chapter officers for relevance).
If you graduate, leave ASU or otherwise choose not to receive information from/about PES - ALD, you can unsubscribe yourself by following the instructions contained at the bottom of every message and here: Send a NEW e-mail message to listserv @ lists.asu.edu with only SIGNOFF PESIGMA in the body of the message. This request must be e-mailed from the address under which you are subscribed; otherwise the listbot does not know whom to unsubscribe.
