Transit by: Timothy Deshaies

Dusk:

Fireflies unbottle quick as Ta-Da!

Leaves syncopate in ordered pairs. Pile neatly according to

internal design. This is the way counting numbers act:

Sequence. Carry-able loads.

Somewhere beyond the gusto

wild-flight rabbits thump one--two--three.

Was a warning:

Hummingbirds and flute become integrated language--my heart

voweled into rhythmic lungs--my jacket

buttoned till the sternum--synergy for bumblebee

who is left out intentionally.

Blame it on the horizon:

Fox deep in silhouette.

Red against red. Through thicket and thistle

thin as a rib.

The animal uncut from its totem,

fierce with light--you were strong

and wouldn't change directions.

The fire-stuff drenched in breeze.

Combinations of pure potential

fell like trusty continuing apples.

We walked together and slow,

so as not to tire

after a long day of resting.
