Due to an increase in the number of people
coming to ASU, it has become very competitive to get
an assistantship or an hourly job. You have to be prepared
to support yourself for atleast two semesters.
Students get campus jobs in variety of
places and offices. The pay ranges anything from 5.15$/
Hour to 12/$/ Hour. As per students the regulations
on an F1 visa are allowed to work for 20 hours per week
during a regular semester and 40 hours per week during
the break i.e. during the winter and the summer break.
To see what jobs are advertised and apply for them you
can follow this Job Link (www.asu.edu/hr/jobs),
or you can go to Arizona State University and go to
Work at ASU link on the home page.
On-campus jobs:
The hourly jobs are easy to find at Arizona State University,
as it is very big University. Also there is a quite
a bit of funding in the form of Graduate Teaching Assistants
(TA) & Research Assistant (RA) available at the
University for international students. This also depends
on which department they are enrolled in. Continuation
of TA's & RA's depends on GPA and there job performance.
Funding:
- Computer Science (CS): The students
in this department stand a good chance of getting
Assistantships than others (you may probably not get
in your first semester but may land up with one in
the second semester, but keep in mind your first semester
GPA goes a long way in determining whether you get
funding or not). Along with these, new students can
get Graduate tuition Scholarship (GTS - Out-of-state
student fees is waived) if they get a grader job with
any Professor in the Department and request him to
recommend his name for GTS. With the present situation,
the chances of getting funding in CS Department are
also diminishing.
- Electrical Engineering (EE): There
are a lot of students in this department so very few
get funding here. Mainly students who have specific
fields of interest and can impress upon the Professor
can get some RA's, depending on there GPA of first
semester some lucky guys can get TAs.
- Industrial Engineering (IE): This
case is also same as that of EE.
- Other Departments: As the number of
students pursuing Master's in other departments is
less they have a good stand of getting an RA or TA.
Along with the funding from the departments there are
quite a few Graduate
Assistant/Associate (GA) positions available in
other departments, which the students can apply for.
Most GA positions require computer skills (C, C++, JAVA,
HTML, MS-Office, Photoshop and Database packages like
MS Access, Sybase etc.). Others require organizational
and public relation skills. The chances of getting a
GA in the first semester are quite good. However it
is important to remember that these positions fill up
quickly, hence we strongly recommend you build up a
strong computer skill set (HTML, MS ACCESS, JAVA, C++
recommended) and arrive here at least two weeks before
the semester starts.
Hourly jobs:
There are a lot of hourly
jobs available at Arizona State University. So most
of the guys stand a good chance of getting one if they
properly apply after reaching here. Mostly jobs are
in the form of Office Assistant, Computer Assistant,
Library Assistant etc. with pay scale ranging from $5.5
- 10.0/hr with Office Assistant getting the least &
computer related jobs highest.
Off-Campus jobs:
The students can start working off-campus i.e. companies
as soon as they come here through Corporate
Leadership Programs (CLP) and Engineering
Internship Program (EIP) provided by the University.
These programs are similar to TA's / RA's and provides
tuition fee waiver and a monthly income of around $1000-1200.
Generally there will be career
fairs conducted by companies to hire students under
this program throughout the year (generally 3-4 times
a year) but the number of companies attending the fairs
has come down drastically due to slowdown of economy.
Also with the present situation not many students are
likely to get a job in the companies.
