Insight Product Development is a Chicago-based design consulting firm with about 25-30 employees at the main Chicago office (they also have offices in Raleigh, Boston, and Shanghai). The staff includes industrial designers, researchers, user interaction designers, engineers, shop technicians, and a sales team. Insight mostly works with medical products, but also other consumer products. The design team is currently 3 staff designers and is a great place to intern. The supervisors give honest feedback and are concerned about making the internship a learning experience. During my time there I was able to participate in the design process on multiple projects, applying many design skills I learned at ASU. While at Insight I worked on sketching concepts, sculpting foam models, story boarding, Solidworks and Rhino CAD modeling, rapid prototyping, and human factors research. I would recommend pursuing an internship at Insight if you are a dedicated worker, flexible, can be independent while also asking for help when needed, and have an interest in medical design.
