August 30, 2004 Curve

  1. Call to order & Introductions
  2. Summary of Habitat′s goals, mission, "gist"
  3. Definition of membership by Sarah
    1. $10/year for active members – all goes to builds and volunteering
    2. 2 fall activities required for active membership,
    3. inactive membership requires dues in fall and spring
    4. 1 "free" build available (before dues are required), like a test-drive
    5. Tabling defined – education for students and faculty, usually in the MU fountain area, information will be provided before tabling occurs, any member that is has information is able to table.
  4. Summary of build days by Alec
    1. We "answer the call"–notified of open spots on Thursday, usually
    2. We are usually busier in cooler weather
    3. Explanation of selection order
      1. Active members who have paid their dues are given priority
      2. An email is sent out before the build day to inform members of openings
    4. We go to Villa Esperanza most of the time, carpool from campus
    5. Builds generally last until 12 or 1 PM
    6. Lunch is typically provided
  5. Women′s build by Kendra
    1. Great opportunity for female students to build more frequently and w/o waiting
  6. Site hosting by Kendra
    1. Great for those who don′t necessarily want to build
    2. Duties: Greet volunteers, go over safety procedures, ensure safety of volunteers
    3. Transportation, if you don′t have it, can be arranged
    4. A site host can still build, if he/she wants to (will be able to build more frequently and not have to wait for an available spot)
    5. A site host would have to be there every week, or a combination of site hosts would have to be there every week
  7. Child care by Kendra
    1. Take care of children of Habitat homeowners while the parents put in their sweat equity
    2. A necessary service
    3. Still in development
    4. Lots of interest
    5. Since not everyone can build every week, fundraising is important

September 20, 2004 Curve

  1. Opening/Introductions--Marge (President)
    1. Team building activity
    2. Went around the room stating:

      2. Yr in school
      3. Favorite sports or team
    3. Overview of Habitat
    4. Mission: to end poverty, provide housing
    5. Our organization: International, 80 countries around the world, 70% of work done outside the U.S.
    6. M/c questions to test fun fact knowledge of habitat
  2. Sarah (V.P. of Events and Education)
    1. Trade show committee
      1. Az home and garden show in Phx
      2. Has one of the main tables at the Az home and garden show
      3. Need 6 volunteers per day
      4. Friday and Sunday there are 2 shifts
      5. Saturday there are 3 shifts
      6. Date of event: Oct. 8, 9,10
      7. If your are interested you are required to;
        1. Have the ability to communicate well/ persuade strangers for your cause
        2. Trade show "interested in" sign up sheet was passed around
      8. She is working on providing an informational sheet

    2. The Q&A sheets also need to be brought to every tabling event for the interested and the tablers
    3. On Monday, September 27th meet @ Taco Bell in the MU at 5p.m. or email for trade show info.

    1. HFH has a future project for the community
      1. It is a "Goodwill" home improvement store
      2. Once it is built it will be open to the public as well as the needy

      1. Look into the alcohol sales requirements for participants (over 19 yrs. Old?)
    3. Fundraiser w/ Vendors
      1. ISLAND IMPORTS is a company from lake Erie
      2. Women owner wants to come to campus to table her jewelry and crafts
      3. Sterling Creations out of California
      4. Man sells shoes, other miscellaneous items
      5. When: 10/19 – 10/21
    4. Build days are scarce that is why we must fundraise
    5. A new community is being built @ Capital Mall
    6. Four houses back 2 back
    7. Opportunities to help are in

      3. Glendale
      4. And soon Apache Junction
    8. Future blds:
      1. Duplexes/ condos
      2. Housing for disabled families
      3. More affordable housing for single moms
    9. Need SPONSORS: reason for scarcity of builds in our area

      1. Being a part of the block party would require us tabling
      2. Tabling there can lead to talking to Alumni and possible finding sponsors
      3. Possibility of making a float/ marching

  2. Guest Speaker introduced and spoke about NCCJ "Walk as One"
    1. Flyers were passed out for those who were interested
    2. Date: 11/21/04 @ 1p.m.
    3. Where: Kiwanis Park, Tempe
    4. What is it: Unity walk for the National Conference for Community justice (NCCJ) Programs such as Healthcare disparities and Anytown USA.

  3. Homecoming (Pax)
    1. We are participating in the Cultural Fair during homecoming and need people to help table and get the word out to Alumni
    2. When: November 5th @ 10:30 a.m.
    3. What you will be doing: various activities on Hayden lawn
    4. A sign-up sheet was passed around
    5. If anyone has questions or concerns they can email anyone on the exec. Board here.
    6. Participation does count as service hours because homecoming is a city wide event

    1. Aramark Fundraiser
      1. We have repeatedly called but we are still having problems with setting a time and date to participate.
    2. Island Imports (Sterling silver jewelry)
      1. Woman is coming on 10/26- 10/28 and is selling on Hayden lawn
      2. She is giving Habitat $125/day to have us represent her. In addition if she sells well she will give habitat more money.
      3. If you want to help table on those days let Kendra / Sarah know
      4. If you do not want to table then at least show support by coming out and buying items or telling friends and relatives about the sale.
      5. If you wear a habitat shirt you get a discount from her as well
  5. Guest Speaker: Jerry (our Advisor)
    1. From: Valley of the Sun
      1. Donations/ sponsors are low therefore Habitat cannot build.
      2. There is enough land and need for housing though, so if we fundraise enough $ we can start a build.
    2. TAX CREDIT FORMS
      1. If you or someone that you know files taxes in Az then convince them to donate up to $200 dollars and fill out a form (we have and passed out) and it will be entirely refunded to them.
      2. This is a great way to get sponsors, family, and friends involved in habitats cause.
      3. We will have more sheets available during tabling for homecoming.

    1. We need to fundraise in order to help any family so
    2. $$ Dollars for Devils is the new campaign that we want to launch
      1. Benefits: it takes about $65,000 to build a house in Arizona through Habitat and there are about 65,000 students and faculty on ASU Campus so if everyone donated at least one dollar we could build a home for a deserving family.
      2. With t-shirts and an article in the state press about our cause, we can make this a powerful fundraising slogan
      3. Please talk it up

  7. Intramurals (Jon)
    1. If anyone is interested in playing indoor soccer as a habitat team let him know and sign up.

  8. Zoo lights (Pax)
    1. Date: 11/11-11/13
    2. What is it? Ways to get our cause out there and maybe connect with sponsors (networking).
    3. Interested? Contact Pax or any exec board member on web here
  9. There is a build!!!! (Alec)
    1. This Wednesday @ 7a.m. there will be a build but we need someone who has a car to volunteer.
