The Graduate Scholars of English
Association (GSEA) awards travel grants to support the personal and professional
development of members enrolled in the English department graduate program,
increase the visibility of ASU English’s graduate program and research,
and reward excellence in scholarship. Awards are not automatic; applications
are evaluated and ranked for each deadline. Travel grants support presentations
at scholarly conferences, process at scholarly/writing workshops/retreats,
and job interviews at scholarly conventions. Funds are limited and
guidelines are strictly followed.
Terms of the Award
- Applications are accepted
only from dues paying GSEA members in good standing who have participated in GSEA events during the previous semester. New graduate students will be exempt from the participation requirement for their first semester (one semester only).
- A student may receive only
one award per semester (Fall 2006, Spring 2007). The award must be
expended before June 30, 2008.
- A student may receive only
one award per conference/workshop/retreat attended. Expenses for conference
fees, hotel rates, and/or airfare (in very rare circumstances, mileage)
are reimbursed (no taxis or other local transportation). Mileage must
be approved in advance.
- $75 awards granted,
depending on available funds.
- The applicant receiving
the grant must be making a presentation of his or her own work at a
conference, developing his or her own work at a workshop/retreat, or
representing himself or herself during a professional interview.
- Even if a presentation
is the result of a group project, only one student may receive a travel
award for a single presentation.
- Applications will be reviewed
for projects or papers that are being considered or have been accepted
for presentation.
- To be eligible to receive
the grant, the student must submit proof of project or paper acceptance,
workshop or retreat acceptance, or interview appointment before traveling.
- Be prepared to turn
in relevant receipts (registration fees, travel, hotel).

ELIGIBILITY
From GSEA Bylaws
To be eligible for a grant, the applicant must be a GSEA member1 in good standing, and must have participated in GSEA events during the previous semester. The term "events" include all activities GSEA is involved in throughout the academic semester, such as workshops, fundraisers, business meetings and any other activities that necessitate or solicit GSEA assistance. On the applications, the applicant must list and justify the "events" in which the member has participated. Applications will be prioritized according to the applicant's activity in GSEA.2
1"Member" implies that the graduate student has paid dues for the academic semester by the deadline date for that semester.
2Because of the nature of this directive, enforcement of event participation for travel grants will be suspended for new students for their entry semester (one semester only).
