GELSS Research Symposium
We organize an annual symposium to promote awareness and a sense of excitement about graduate student research being conducted in Life, Earth, and Social Sciences at Arizona State University. We also hope to increase communication among disciplines and to foster collaborations among the different departments making up this symposium. To that end, each session is organized to include several disciplines, including a keynote opening with recognized personalities (see our previous symposia). Most importantly, the symposium is an opportunity for graduate students to share their work and ideas in a professional environment.
By presenting research, you...
• Enrich your research by exchanging ideas with contemporary researchers from different scientific backgrounds
• Improve your communication skills
• Give and receive valuable feedback on research efforts and presentation styles
• Develop professional contacts with researchers and other students
GELSS Panel Discussion
We organize an annual panel discussion to touch on topics that are of everybody's concern. The panel is formed by a leading keynote and four or five ASU professors that sit at a table and discuss the topic after a brief introduction. This activity is open to the public and is also posted on this website after being edited. Although this activity does not have a fixed date, we tend to put it on along with the symposium as the keynote speaker for the symposium is usually the same person that leads the discussion for the panel.
This activity is an invaluable opportunity to learn from the experience of specialists that share their knowledge on an interdisciplinary topic chosen by the GELSS committee.
Outreach Partnership
We are currently working on building a partnership with local Phoenix area high schools. The GELSS Outreach Subcommittee plans to start working with science teachers from those schools to design activities for students based on grad student research. Stay tuned! |
