Service Learning through ASU learn by doing

Adding an internship or getting “hands-on” field experience is an important way to round out your education at ASU. Many classes offer a service learning component to their curriculum. The diaconal ministry of the Diocese of Arizona helps place Episcopal students in a variety of settings. Ongoing internships are available in Science, Math, English, Justice Studies, Spanish, Religious Studies and UNI.

Jaguar Creek, Belize
Doran Scholar Fellowship
The Doran Scholars Program gives financial assistance to students coming out of the Phoenix Union High School District, an area with the highest percentage of economically disadvantaged household in the Phoenix area. Not only does the Fellowship provide financial assistance, but it focuses on developing leadership skills and community service programs. Jaguar Creek is a Belizean NGO owned and operated by Target Earth International – a faith based global sustainability NGO committed to the work of serving the earth and the poor in regions of the world where people live on less than a dollar a day. Father Neil, Dean of the Cathedral Church of St. John the Baptist, serves on the board of Jaguar Creek.

ECM has linked ASU’s Service Learning Program to Jaguar Creek and is helping
design Belizean internships for ASU students and a Winter Term Tropical Biology class for members of the Doran Scholars program during January 2004.
