About our chapter  

CMENC is an organization for college students who are studying to become music teachers: general music, choral, instrumental--band or strings. This national organization has 15,412 undergraduate music education student members from 664 chapters in the U.S. and abroad.

ASU Chapter Leadership 2009-2010

Roberto Paz

Roberto was a 2007 graduate of Maryvale High School. At Maryvale, he was the National Honor Society President and graduated summa cum laude as the class valedictorian. He was highly involved in music as he was the principle French horn player in their wind ensemble for all four years. He also played snare drum in the marching band where he was encouraged to pursue drum and bugle corps activity. In the fall of 2003, as a college freshman, Roberto auditioned for The Academy Drum and Bugle Corps, earning membership and participating from 2004-2007.  During this time, he had the great experience of performing in The Academy when they won their first World Championship title in 2006.
In 2008, Roberto became a member of the Concord Blue Devils and is still actively involved with this ensemble. At Arizona State, Roberto is a double major in  music education and percussion performance.  Professor J.B. Smith and Dom Moio are his current teachers, but he has also been taught by ASU graduate Bill Sallak. Lastly, Roberto is involved in teaching the Sun Devil Marching Band.

Jennifer McQuade

Jennifer is a clarinet player in Dr. Jana Starling's studio.  She graduated from Thatcher High School in 2005, then attended Eastern Arizona College on scholarship.  She graduated in 2008 with an Associate of Arts degree in music.  She then transferred to ASU in the Fall of 2008. In the future, she plans to teach high school band.

Shawna Balzer

Shawna is a music education major in Jana Starling¹s clarinet studio. She attended Central High School in Phoenix, Arizona and graduated with honors, after which she enrolled at Northern Arizona University with an academic scholarship.  In 2008, Shawna transferred to Arizona State University to finish her degree in instrumental music education. She plans to graduate from ASU in 2011 and pursue a career in middle school music education.

Greg Mills

Greg Mills is currently a music education major in Dr. Timothy McAllister's saxophone studio. He grew up locally in Mesa, Arizona, and graduated from Mountain View High School where he served as Drum Major for two years. In addition to his pursuit of music education, he is also an avid composer. His largest work "Requiem" for full Wind Ensemble was the winner of the MENC Composition Talent Search, and premiered at the 2008 MENC convention in Milwaukee. He plans to graduate in 2012 and pursue a career in High School instrumental education.
