The CHINESE List

CHINESE@asu.edu is the electronic "mailing lists" of CSSA (Chinese Student & Scholar Association) at Arizona State University. As a member of the group, you can:
  • Get messages from the list
  • Put important messages to the list, so all members in the list may see it

  • How to join and leave CHINESE list

  • subscribe CHINESE first_name last_name phone_number
  • signoff CHINESE
  • 1. To join the list

Send an email to LISTSERV@asu.edu with message body:
  • SUBSCRIBE CHINESE first_name last_name phone_number
  • Depending on how the list is set up, once you have sent your subscription request you may receive a message to ask you to confirm. If so, Please read it carefully and REPLY it with the message OK.
For example, you may get a message like this:

    Date: Thu, 18 Dec 1997 10:11:38 -0700
From: "L-Soft list server at Arizona State U. (1.8c)"
    To: Chunhua Zhao
    Subject: Command confirmation request (600451)
    Your command:
    SUBSCRIBE CHINESE Chunhua Zhao 123-4567
    has been received ... ...

You should reply without including the original message. So if your mail program automatically quotes the message you are replying to, you should delete the quoted text before sending the "OK". Note also that you must reply from the address from which the original subscription request was sent. The following is the reply:

To : "L-Soft list server at Arizona State U. (1.8c)"
    Cc :
    Attchmnt:
Subject : Re: Command confirmation request (600451)
    ----- Message Text -----
    OK

    2. To leave the list

Send an email to LISTSERV@asu.edu with message body:
  • SIGNOFF CHINESE

  • How To Send Mail To A List

You can send a message to all the members, the list server, or the list owner(manager).
  • 1. If you want to send a message to all the PEOPLE on the mailing list, the right address to use is:
  • CHINESE@asu.edu
  • 2. If you want to send a COMMAND for the computer to execute, the right address is:
  • LISTSERV@asu.edu
  • 3. If you want to contact the person who manages the mailing list, write to:
  • CHINESE-Request@asu.edu

  • How To Set Your Subscription Options

First, you may want to review your subscriber options. To do this you use the query command. Send this command to LISTSERV@asu.edu:
  • Query CHINESE
  • You may get a result like this:

MAIL You are sent individual postings as they are
received MIME You prefer to receive messages in MIME format
FULLHDR Full (normal) mail headers (formerly "FULLBSMTP")
REPRO You receive a copy of your own postings
NOACK No acknowledgement of successfully processed postings

    The most useful option is:
    Mail/NOMail
Setting this option to Mail indicates that you will receive mail from the list. NOMail is the complementary command that stops mail but leaves you subscribed to the list. (NOMail is often a good compromise for users who are leaving the office for vacation or on extended business trips, and who don't want a full mailbox on their return.)

Then you can set your option by sending the command to listserv@asu.edu:
  • set CHINESE nomail
