What is Arnold Air Society?
Arnold Air Society (AAS) is a professional, honorary, service organization made up of Air Force ROTC cadets from around 150 of the nation's colleges and universities and United States Air Force Academy cadets. It is a nation-wide organization with the primary purpose of developing more effective Air Force Officers. It engages in the planning and execution of community service, educational, and fund-raising activities. Currently, there are approximately 3000 cadets that are members of the AAS. Any cadet is qualified to become a member of the society, provided he/she has shown interest in such membership, maintained sufficient scholastic standards, and has successfully completed the initiation program.
AAS provides cadets with leadership, organizational and public relations opportunities. Cadets are also afforded the opportunity to meet and interact with cadets from around the country. Cadets are encouraged to communicate with local government and business leaders, as well as the Air Force Association.
AAS accomplishes its goals by carrying out projects in the local community that serve the disadvantaged, foster environmental awareness, and promote awareness and remembrance of Prisoners of War and those Missing in Action. Service projects range from joint national projects, which are established at the national conclave each year, to local community or campus service projects.
History
AAS was formed on the campus of the University of Cincinnati in October 1947, as a local organization. In 1948, the United States Air Force officially recognized the AAS and issued official regulations encouraging and authorizing Air Force support of the organization. In 1950, the Arnold Air Society became affiliated with the Air Force Association. The Air Force Association united a number of Air Force ROTC units into one national honorary Society - Arnold Air Society.
