2007 School Club Roundup Results

This year, we were unable to come up with a sufficient number of volunteers with overlapping schedules to continue our seven-year tradition of operating on-campus, outside, underneath the balcony of the Student Services Building. Instead, we operated from club president KC7MOD's home station. Consequences of this decision included:
  1. We were neither able to recruit new members nor educate the general public about the benefits of amateur radio, the upcoming license changes, etc.
  2. Club member participation was reduced as a result of not being on-campus.
  3. We avoided the daily setup/tear down routine that costs us hours of labor.
  4. We didn't get wet when it rained (as it ALWAYS seems to do the week of the SCR!).
Propagation was the worst we have ever experienced during the SCR, causing us to submit our lowest score ever! Our original plan, to work 6 hours on Monday through Thursday and skip operating on Friday due to club member availability, was killed by horrible propagation from Monday through Tuesday afternoon. Propagation picked up to acceptable, but far from great, levels for roughly 24 hours before dropping off Wednesday afternoon. We took advantage of the better propagation and introduced the SCR to some of the hams that hang out on 80m -- after all, how many schools operate the contest at 07:00z? By Wednesday evening, our score was just slightly over what we had hoped to obtain the first day. Thursday's poor propagation meant CW operation for most of the day. Friday was better, but limited club member availability meant minimal operating strategy in order to reach the 24 hour time limit.
