2006 School Club Roundup Results
Despite being in just about the worst part of the solar cycle, the 2006
School Club Roundup was an excellent year for W7ASU. Participation was up
(although it's never as high as we'd like it to be), as was our score. With Arizona
being in the middle of a record drought, it was the first year that we weren't
subjected to moisture, although we still experienced heat, cold, and record wind.
(Fortunately for us, the R7 stayed up through it all!) Club members' schedules didn't
permit us to work on Tuesday, causing Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday to be
"use it or lose it" days in regards to the six hour rule. We were able to use all
our time except on Friday, when the hour earlier termination of the contest, equipment
failure, and poor propagation meant closer to 5 hours of operation. Thanks to the
hard work and perseverance of KD7TQA,
The State Press ran announcements about
our event 3 of the 5 days, something they haven't done for us in years despite us
filling out the paperwork! This allowed us to do a bit of extra recruiting as
curious students and staff read the announcements and then dropped by to visit
us.
The club continues its search for a space to set up a permanent station on campus.
Until this happens, we rely on a large number of people in order to make events like
the School Club Roundup happen. In particular, we'd like to thank
KC7KFF for continuing to loan us their R7
antenna, Patrick O'Rourke, who allows
us to use the SSV building for our temporary station during the week, and
KC7EFP, who always loans us his equipment for the
contest. Finally, we'd like to thank all the club members who dropped by to help
make this event a success!

Alum KC7EFP took a day off work to help us operate. Thanks James!
At least they look like they are having fun! (KD7VPG and KC7EFP)
KD7LGH wishes for better propagation.
"What the heck are they doing?" wonders a passer-by. This is just one of the many raised-eyebrow looks we get throughout the week.
