Constitution for 2005-2006 Academic
Year
American Choral Directors Association,
PREAMBLE
We the members of American
Choral Directors Association, Arizona State University Student Chapter, and
subscribing to the regulations and policies of
Article I - Name
The Name of this
organization shall be the American Choral Directors Association, Arizona State
University Student Chapter.
Article II - Affiliation and
Co-Ordination
This chapter of the
American Choral Directors Association is an integral part of the National
American Choral Directors Association, and shall be governed by the
professional and financial policies laid down in the National Constitution of
the American Choral Directors Association. Its official insignia shall be that
of the National American Choral Directors Association.
Article III - Purpose
The purpose of this
organization shall be those as set forth in the National Constitution of the
American Choral Directors Association, and are stated as follows:
1. To foster and
promote choral singing which will provide artistic and spirited experience for
the participants.
2. To foster and
promote the finest types of choral music to make these experiences possible.
3. To foster and
encourage rehearsal procedures conducive to attaining the highest level
possible in musicianship and artistic performance.
4. To foster and
promote the organization and development of choral groups of all types in
schools, colleges, and churches.
5. To foster and
promote the organization and development of choral societies in cities and
communities.
6. To foster and
promote the intelligent understanding of choral music as an important medium of
artistic expression.
7. To foster and
promote significant research in the field of choral music.
8. To foster and
promote composition of superior quality in both music and text for all choral
combinations.
9. To cooperate with
all organizations dedicated to the development of musical cultures in

professional news and information about choral music.
Article IV - Membership
The membership of
this organization shall be made up of students at
Article V - Officers
The officers of this
chapter of the American Choral Directors Association shall be as follows: a President, a President-Elect, a Vice
President, a Secretary, and a Treasurer.
The duties of the President
shall be as follows: to preside at the meetings, to appoint committees of the
chapter (unless otherwise provided for in the By-Laws), to represent this
organization when necessary, and to administer the policies as laid down in
this constitution and its By-Laws.
The duties of the
President-Elect shall be as follows: Shall be responsible for transitioning the
office of President to the new leader. The officer is responsible for becoming
familiar with all the By-Laws which govern this organization and for acting on
the President’s behalf when the President is not in attendance or is
incapacitated to perform the duties of the office. The President-Elect is a
limited office, only being filled during the final semester of the current
President’s term. The President-Elect has the same rights and authority as the President
and it is the responsibility of the current officers to ensure this authority
is implemented with the SORC.
The duties of the Vice
president shall be as follows: to preside at meetings the president is absent
or incapacitated to perform the duties of the office and there is no
President-Elect, and to assist in administering the affairs of the chapter on
such committees as are designated in the By-Laws
The duties of the Secretary
shall be as follows: to keep the records of membership and meetings and to
carry on necessary chapter correspondence.
The duties of the Treasurer
shall be as follows: to keep a record of all financial matters pertaining to
this organization, to collect and preserve the chapter’s funds, to pay out of
the chapter’s funds the necessary and designated monies to meet the financial
obligations of the chapter, and to pass on to the treasurer succeeding him/her
all records and funds remaining in the treasury.
Assignment of the President-Elect
During the final
semester of the current President’s term a successor shall be elected. The
Vice-President will automatically receive nomination for the office, and others
are allowed to be nominated. If more than one person wishes to be considered
for the office then an election will be held at the next chapter meeting and
whoever has the majority of votes will become the President-Elect. The
President-Elect automatically becomes the President at the end of the semester
elected into office and assumes all responsibilities at that time.
Election of Officers
Election of officers
for the fall term shall be held in the preceding spring. The office of
President shall not be voted on during any semester when a President-Elect is
serving.
Assignment of Special Committees and
Creation of New Offices
The Officers reserve
the right to create new committees and/or officers as needed. Those duties will
be specified at the time of creation and documented as a temporary amendment to
the constitution until there is no longer a need for that committee. Any such
committee created by the officers will be dissolved at the conclusion of the
school year unless it is decided to create such position permanently.
Impeachment of Officers
If an officer is
found to be conducting him/her self in a manner unbecoming of such a leadership
position the organization reserves the right to ask the officer to step down
from office. If the officer does not agree to voluntarily remove him/her self
from office then an emergency session will be held at which the matter will be
discussed and the matter of impeachment voted upon. To impeach an officer there
must be a vote majority of 75%, at which time the officer will be removed from
office and a special election will be held.
Article VI - Meetings
Regular meetings
shall be held at such times and places as shall be designated in the By-Laws.
Special meetings may
be called by the president after consultation with and approval of the other
officers and faculty-sponsor of the chapter.
The public may be
invited to attend any regular or special meeting of this organization.
Article VII - Amending the Constitution
The constitution of
this organization may be amended by two-thirds vote of the membership at any
meeting where a quorum is present: provide that notice of the proposed
amendment has been given at the previous meeting.
BY-LAWS OF THE
Article I - Time and Place of Meetings
The time and place
of meetings of the Arizona State University Student Chapter of American Choral
Directors Association shall be decided by the chapter members only after
consultation with, and upon approval of, the chapter’s faculty advisor.
The time and place
of the meetings of this chapter of the American Choral Directors Association
shall be specified in the previous meeting.
Article II - Standards of Membership
The standards of
membership have been established in the national constitution; and in all cases
must be approved by the faculty advisor of the local chapter.
Membership shall be of
two classes—Active and inactive. Each member shall acclaim his membership class
at the beginning of each semester. Active members have voting privileges.
Inactive members do not have voting privileges.
Article III - Loss of Membership
A member of this
chapter of the American Choral Directors Association may be dropped from
membership if he fails to pay annual membership dues as required by the
National Organization.
A student so dropped
from membership may be reinstated provided he/she meets the financial
obligations of the National Organization.
Article IV - National Dues and
Assessments
Specific National
dues shall be paid by the individual members of the local chapter to the
National American Choral Directors Association.
Assessments may be
made upon the membership to defray the costs of special undertakings by a
majority vote of a quorum which was informed at the previous meeting.
Article V - Amending the By-Laws
The By-Laws of this
chapter of the American Choral Directors Association may be amended by a
majority vote of the active membership, provided such proposed amendment is
placed before the chapter at a previous meeting.
