Welcome! ¡Bienvenidos!

Dear Colleague,

Please accept our invitation to become a part of the Chicano/Latino Faculty & Staff Association (CLFSA) of Arizona State University. Founded in the fall of 1970 CLFSA’s mission is to enhance the welfare of all residents of Arizona and to promote better education in, and advancement of, the Chicano/Latino community. Additionally, CLFSA promotes networking and collegiality among all ASU Chicano/Latino faculty and staff, irrespective of whether employment was a recent event or decades ago. Our ongoing efforts include advocacy for inclusion as a working value of the University, awarding of scholarships to students attending ASU, and recognition of the achievements of Chicano/Latino staff, students, and faculty. Further, CLFSA members engage in extensive outreach to incoming and future Sun Devils, provide service to the broader community, and work passionately to ensure that the University is a welcoming place to all.

CLFSA meets once a month – the first Wednesday from Noon to 1:00 PM at the Memorial Union on the ASU Tempe campus, unless otherwise noted. These meetings typically feature a speaker(s) on current topics of interest to the membership, updates on special projects and operation of the Association, and announcements by our peers. Recent projects have included support of Chicano/Latino families and a forum on immigration issues. We intend to continue these stimulating projects during the upcoming 2008-2009 academic year and to embark upon other activities such as a conference on recruitment, retention, and promotion.

Be a part of this active organization: Attend meetings, nominate an awardee, and/or suggest a project. Your voice and participation is important in building a stronger Chicano/Latino community at ASU. Membership dues are $20 annually, however, we are delighted to offer a 1-year COMPLIMENTARY CLFSA membership to faculty and staff who are new hires to ASU for the 2008-2009 academic year. So, take the first step!

Arizona State University is a growing and dynamic institution. While we will continue to pursue the goals of CLFSA as outlined above, we recognize that within an evolving environment, every year presents a new set of challenges. We invite you to join CLFSA in addressing current and future concerns involving the Chicano/Latino community at ASU and in Arizona. Together we will work to shape and address our future, discover solutions, and promote familia entre todos.

You are invited to the ASU Chicano/Latino Faculty & Staff Association Fall Welcome on Thursday, October 9, 2008 at 5:00 PM in the Memorial Union Alumni Lounge 202. Please RSVP to Roxann.Gonzales@asu.edu no later then Monday, October 6, 2008 (this is only for logistics).

Sinceramente,

Gabriel Escontrias, Jr., CLFSA President
Vera A. Lopez, CLFSA Faculty Liaison
Kevin J. Salcido, CLFSA Staff Liaison
