To assist you with your application, we have provided a step-by-step procedure for applying to our department. Apply by January 15.

Admission Procedures

1. Submit Division of Graduate Studies Application. The first step in applying to a graduate program at ASU is completing the application to the Division of Graduate Studies at ASU and submitting all application materials cited in the Graduate Catalog.

2. In addition to materials submitted to the Division of Graduate Studies, the following information must be submitted directly to the School of Social and Family Dynamics:

  • School of Social and Family Dynamics Application Form (apply online)
    Please note that as part of the application you will be asked to include a 4 to 6 page, double-spaced, personal statement addressing the following:

    I. State your professional goals and reasons for desiring to enroll in this program,
    II. Describe your strengths that will help you succeed in the program and in reaching your professional goals.
    III. Describe, in detail, your research experience (include a description of your Master’s thesis if applicable).
    IV. Indicate your personal research interests as specifically as possible.
    V. Identify two or three faculty whose research interests match your own. Explain why you believe these are good matches: Sociology faculty research interests (Word file), Sociology research areas (Word file); Family studies faculty research interests (Word file).
    VI. Describe the significant responsibilities you have held (give names, addresses, and phone numbers of persons who know you in relation to these responsibilities). THIS IS NOT REQUIRED FOR SOCIOLOGY APPLICANTS.
    VII. Include any additional information that you feel will help the committee evaluate your application.

  • A copy of the applicant's scores on the Graduate Record Examination. Applications cannot be processed without a photocopy of your GRE scores.
  • Unofficial copies of transcripts need to be submitted to the School of Social and Family Dynamics. Your application cannot be processed without copies of all transcripts that are submitted to the Division of Graduate Studies.
  • Three letters of recommendation, including at least one from instructors at the applicant's undergraduate school. Each letter of recommendation must be accompanied by the following form (download recommendation form, Word file). Letters of recommendation from family members and friends will not be considered.
  • Complete Teaching/Research Assistantship Form if you are interested in applying for an assistantship (download teaching/research assistantship form, Word file; or see Appendix E of the Family and Human Development Handbook).

For applicants to Family and Human Development Master’s and Ph.D. Programs, please also send the following:

  • A resume or curriculum vita that summarizes the academic and employment experiences of the applicant (email to Sandra.Balistreri@asu.edu; or send to Graduate Secretary, Program in Family and Human Development, School of Social and Family Dynamics, PO Box 873701, ASU, Tempe, AZ, 85287-3701)

For applicants to the Sociology Master’s and Ph.D. Programs, please also send the following:

  • A sample of writing (e.g., a paper written for a class or a seminar, an honor's thesis, etc) (email to Sandra.Balistreri@asu.edu; or send to Graduate Secretary, Program in Family and Human Development, School of Social and Family Dynamics, PO Box 873701, ASU, Tempe, AZ, 85287-3701)
