My research focuses primarily on the demographic aspects of social change in sub-Saharan Africa, Eurasia, and Latin America. I view demographic phenomena not only as outcomes but also as an organic part of complex and rapid social transformations in those societies. My research therefore touches upon such diverse themes as reproduction and reproductive control, HIV/AIDS prevention, migration, gender relations, traditional healing practices, and religious participation. In my research I employ various methods ranging from statistical analysis of large survey datasets to in-depth interviewing and ethnographic observation.
