The Community Action Research Experiences (CARE) program is a year-long concentration that provides a rare opportunity for talented ASU juniors of all majors. In the context of a small community of peers, students develop skills and gain experience in leadership and community development through conducting a collaborative research project that benefits a community agency serving children and families.

Background

The SSFD CARE program is based on a model developed at the Hart Leadership Institute at Duke University called Service Opportunities in Leadership. The purpose of CARE is to integrate the research mission of the university, service to the community, and civic engagement of students. Community partners, students, and faculty work together to address a question that is important to the community partners. The applied research projects (problem definition, data collection, analyses, and conclusions) represent the core of the service provided to the community partners.

What is the CARE program?

CARE is a year-long program beginning Spring semester and continuing through Summer and Fall semesters. CARE is designed to:

  • Develop the leadership and community engagement capacity of talented undergraduate Juniors/Seniors
  • Guide students in collaborating with a community agency to develop and implement an action research project that will benefit the agency
  • Align with SSFD and Barrett Honors program requirements and guide the timely completion of the Honors thesis (for students who elect to do this)

Is CARE right for you?

  • Will you be a Junior with a GPA of 3.5 or above? A previous research methods course is also desirable.
  • Are you willing to dedicate the time to being part of a personally challenging year-long leadership development program that combines in-depth coursework (with graduate level reading and writing requirements), experiential learning, critical reflection, faculty mentoring, and community service through an action research project?
  • Do you want to form a close-knit community of peers dedicated to conducting worthwhile community action research?
  • Do you want to gain a deeper understanding of yourself and of the kinds of leadership qualities needed to tackle complex problems in the real world?
  • Do you want to explore how you might integrate community engagement with your future career goals?

If so, then this program is for you!
