Pogonomyrmex mayri-group
Pogonomyrmex mayri consists
of a monotypic group in which all three castes are easily distinguished from
congeners. Workers have: (1) deeply
incised sculpturing on head and mesosoma (similar to
that of P. mendozanus),
(2) antennal scapes that are densely granulate-punctate with a strongly flattened base, and (3) anterior
margin of clypeus concave with a small medial tooth. The queen is ergatoid,
the ocelli are indistinct or absent, and the postpetiole is notably enlarged compared to workers. Males are distinguished by: (1) an elongate
neck, (2) postpetiole more than twice as long as
wide, and (3) petiole and peduncle not differentiated, forming one broadly
rounded segment.
