Taxonomic history:
Pogonomyrmex guatemaltecus Wheeler, 1914; 149. Zacapa, Guatemala, in the extremely arid plains known as "La Fragua", a region with pronounced xerophytic vegetation, collected by W.M. Wheeler on 12-14 December, 1911.
Etymology: The name, guatemaltecus, was derived from Wheeler collecting the type series of this species in Guatemala.
