Taxonomic history (from RAJ):
Pogonomyrmex bispinosus var. semistriata Emery, 1906: 158 (worker, queen). Syntypes examined: 1 worker, 1 queen [MCZ], 3 workers [MHNG], 1 worker, 2 queens [MSNG]. CHILE, Valparaiso Region: Talca Province, Viña del Mar. Snelling & Hunt, 1976: 75 (synonomy under vermiculatus: not confirmed here) (MHNG worker here designated LECTOTYPE). NEW STATUS
Pogonomyrmex brevispinosus (misspelled) var. spinolae Santschi, 1925: 223 (worker). Syntypes examined: 15 workers [NHMB]. CHILE, Valparaíso (Miss Edwards leg.). Snelling & Hunt, 1975: 75 (synonomy under vermiculatus: not confirmed here). NEW COMB.
Etymology: Emery did not discuss the derivation of the name semistriata (Latin, from semi - = half and striatus = furrowed), but his description suggests that it was derived from the gaster of the worker having longitudinal striae, while the gaster of the queen lacked striae.
