Species: Pogonomyrmex RAJ-punensis ( unpublished manuscript name; name not to be used) Holotype worker [MACN: CASENT0172692]: ARGENTINA, Catamarca: Departamento Belén, Rt 43 at 101.5 km SE Antofagasta, 26º 44.3'S 67º 06.5'W, 12,630' (3827 m), 18 January 2006 (R.A. Johnson #3814). Additional paratype series from the same locality and date - RAJ #3813: FML (6w), MACN (12w), LACM (6w), MCZ (6w), RAJC (19w, 1q, 1m), UCDC (3w), USNM (6w).
Etymology:
The specific epithet, punensis, is a noun that is derived from this species occurring in the Puna Desert region of Catamarca Province, Argentina.
