Species: Pogonomyrmex RAJ-alticola (unpublished manuscript name; name not to be used)
Holotype worker [MACN: CASENT0922172]: ARGENTINA, Salta: Departamento Rosario de Lerma, Rt 51 at 2.8 km NW Santa Rosa de Tastil, 24º 26.4'S 65º 58.3 'W , 10,260' (3310 m), 28 March 2015 (R.A. Johnson #5398). Paratypes, same data as holotype: FML (3w), LACM (6w), MACN (9w), MCZ (9w), RAJC (32w, 1q ), USNM (9w). Additional paratype series from same locality and date - RAJ #5397: RAJC (3w); RAJ #5396 (3w). Additional paratypes from same locality, collected 23 January 2010: RAJ #4334 (3w); RAJ #4357: FML (3w), MACN (3w), RAJC (13w, 4q), UCDC (2w).
Etymology:
The specific epithet alticola (from Latin, altus = high, and -cola = to inhabit) is derived from this species occurring in high elevation (altiplano) habitats in the Andes. This species has been collected at 4495 m, which is the highest known elevation record for the genus.
