Holotype worker [MACN: CASENT0235307]: ARGENTINA, Chubut: Departamento Escalante, Jct Rts 37 & 26, 45º46.8'S, 68º03.8'W, 2380' (720 m), 19 February 2014 (R.A. Johnson #5195). Paratypes, same data as holotype: FML (3w), LACM (3w), MACN (9w), MCZ (12w), RAJC (29w, 6aq, 9m). Additional paratype series from the same locality and date - RAJ #5196: FML (6w), LACM (9w), MACN (3w), RAJC (6w), UCDC (3w), USNM (6w); RAJ #5197: RAJC (7w).
Etymology:
The specific epithet, varicolor (from Latin, varius = different, changing, varying, and color = color), is derived from the variable color patterns displayed by workers of this species, both within and across colonies.
