Species: Pogonomyrmex "sanm"NEW STATUS (unpublished change of status; name not to be used)
Taxonomic history (from RAJ):
Pogonomyrmex carbonarius sanmartini Kusnezov, 1953: 110 (worker, in key). Syntypes examined: 9 workers [USNM], 3 workers [LACM], #3980, ARGENTINA, Neuquén Province: in the area surrounding San Martín de los Andes, in the zone of cypress trees (N. Kusnezov leg.). See also Kusnezov, 1960: 358 (USNM worker here designated LECTOTYPE). NEW STATUS
Etymology:
Kusnezov did not discuss the naming of this species in his description, which consisted of a one sentence couplet in a key. However, this species is surely named in honor of General José de San Martín, who was a famous Argentine general and the prime leader of the southern part of South America's successful struggle for independence from Spain.
