Taxonomic history (from RAJ):
Pogonomyrmex silvestrii niger Santschi, 1925: 156, fig. 3b (worker, male). Syntypes examined: 6 workers, 1 male [MACN], 5 workers, 1 male [NHMB], #1542, ARGENTINA, Catamarca Province: Cerro Colorado (Weiser). Kusnezov, 1951: 250 (synonomized under P. brevibarbis niger; synonomy not confirmed here). See also Gallardo, 1932: 114, fig. 8 (MACN worker here designated LECTOTYPE). NEW STATUS
Pogonomyrmex carrettei var. incultus Santschi, 1925: 157, fig. 3d (worker, queen). Syntypes examined: 4 workers, 3 queens [MACN], 6 workers, 1 queen [NHMB], #1543, ARGENTINA, Catamarca Province: Cerro Colorado (Weiser leg.); Kusnezov, 1951: 250 (synonomy under brevibarbis niger: not confirmed here). Etymology:
The specific epithet, niger (from Latin, niger = dark or black), refers to the color of this species. In the first line of his description, Santschi said that this form differd from the type (P. brevibarbis) in being black rather than brown.
