Graduate Assistantships

APPLICATION PROCESS

Candidate must first apply for admission to the graduate program independently through the Graduate College Admissions Office. Graduate Admission Application, graduate application fee, transcripts, and any necessary test scores (e.g., TOEFL) are submitted directly to the Graduate College.

Please visit the ASU Graduate College's home page at: http://www.asu.edu/graduate. You may access the graduate application by going to: http://www.asu.edu/gradapp/

Deadlines

Application into our graduate Spanish Degree Program may be made at any time. However, the deadline for priority assignments for the next academic year is January 1.

Applications for scholarships and/or TA-ships are not considered until the applicant has been admitted with regular status to the Graduate College and to our program. Scholarships and TA-ships are normally awarded by the beginning of the academic year (i.e., in the Fall).

Materials for Admission to be Submitted Directly to the Spanish Graduate Program

Please submit the following materials to the Director of the Spanish Graduate Program, School of International Letters and Cultures:

  1. at least two letters of recommendation addressing your academic experience and potential in Spanish.
  2. a brief personal statement of your goals (in Spanish if your native language is English, or vice versa).
  3. a writing sample in Spanish (a term paper, thesis chapter, etc.)

Additional Materials Required for Graduate Teaching Assistant/Associate Positions

  1. If a candidate is interested in obtaining a TAship, the two letters of recommendation should also address his/her competence in Spanish and his/her ability (potential or demonstrated) to conduct a university-level language course. If the authors of the academic letters are unfamiliar with a candidate's teaching ability, a separate letter addressing this issue from a more appropriate source should be included in the application package.
  2. The Language Proficiency Form must be completed by a faculty member at an accredited institution.
  3. The Application for Graduate Teaching Assistantship form is available in both Word DOC and PDF format from the Graduate College's forms page.

International Students

All Graduate Teaching Assistants/Associates for whom English is not their native language must have a minimum TOEFL score of 213/550 for admission; and must also take the Test of Spoken English (TSE), or the ASU SPEAK test (only given on campus). Potential TAs must pass this test with a minimum of 55/230, in order to secure their position. It is advisable that these students take the TSE test in their home country, preferably at the time they take the TOEFL. If a potential TA does not receive the minimum passing score, their contract will automatically be voided. International students should apply as early as possible in the fall semester, preferably before October 1 for the next fall.
