If your degree requires proof of proficiency in a language other than English, Arizona State University offers many languages that may fulfill that requirement. To verify the specific requirements for your degree, contact the Academic Advisor of your major.
The foreign language proficiency requirement for your major may be fulfilled in one of five ways:
- Complete a 202 level ASU language course with a grade of “C” or better (For Greek, GRK 301 AND 302; For Portuguese and Romanian, POR 314 or ROM 314).
- Complete a 5th semester level ASU course taught in the language with a grade of “C” or better.
- Pass a 4th semester ASU proficiency exam with a grade of “C” or better (no credit awarded).
- Pass the CLEP exam for French 202, German 202, or Spanish 202 (credit awarded), or pass a 4th semester ASU comprehensive exam for any other language taught at ASU with a grade of “C” or better (credit awarded).
- International students and native speakers of a foreign language can show proof of completion of secondary education at a school in which the language of instruction is not English. Bring your international high school transcripts to the Director of International Admissions, Dr. Zohreh Sotoodeh, to obtain a letter from her that states whether your high school work outside of the U.S. fulfills the college’s language requirement. Upon her approval bring a copy of the letter to the CLAS Graduation office, or to the college of your major if your major is not in CLAS.
