The Exam Application, with the selected book, must be submitted to the Languages & Literatures Department no later than the above application date for each exam. The application can be picked up in Wilson Hall or in the Languages and Literatures Department (LL 440). This application must be signed by your Graduate Advisor or the Chair of your committee before it can be submitted for approval.
The text for the exam must be in the student's chosen foreign language, must be a minimum of 200 pages, must be a scholarly work, must not be fiction or poetry, and must be approved by both the student's advisor and the Languages and Literatures Department. It is advisable for the test to relate to the applicant's field of study or research. You will be graded on your ability to translate a short text from the foreign language being tested, into coherent English. Translations should include main ideas and important details of the passage.
The exam is graded on a pass/fail basis. A 'Pass' translated text would contain main ideas and important details of the foreign language text. Vocabulary and grammar would contain main ideas and important details of the foreign language text. The English translation should consist of grammatically correct sentences, which form a coherent text that could stand on its own as an understandable piece of prose.The results of your test will be reported within four weeks of the examination.

All exams are from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM on the scheduled test date. The room for the exam will be decided upon later and sent to each examinee by a confirmation letter
