About the Program
FACULTY OF CLASSICS AND MIDDLE EASTERN LETTERS AND CULTURES
Little over a hundred years ago, virtually nobody spoke Hebrew as a primary language. In fact, Theodor Herzl—one of the founding fathers of the modern state of Israel—mused that it would not even be possible to buy a train ticket in a language that lacked the most basic vocabulary.

Hebrew today, on the other hand, is the language of a vibrant Israeli culture and the mother tongue of most Israelis (who do purchase railway tickets in their language). Israeli authors, writing in Hebrew, have claimed a place of prominence for Hebrew literature on the global literary stage and have been recipients of the Nobel Prize for Literature. Many of their writings have been translated into countless languages, opening a window onto Israeli and Hebrew culture for readers around the world.

The Hebrew program at ASU is designed to provide students with basic linguistic skills in the Hebrew language, and to familiarize them with the complexities and intricacies of Hebrew culture, Israeli society and history, and Jewish civilization—in all of which the Hebrew language plays important roles.
