Doug Spencer completed his Bachelor of Arts in German Studies at ASU (summa cum laude) with a minor in Women's Studies and then studied at UC Berkeley under Claire Kramsch where he completed his Master of Arts in German Literature and Culture as a Eugene Cota-Robles Diversity Fellow. At Berkeley, Doug coordinated the Gender in German Studies (GiGS) working group, taught German language courses, and overall had a great time living the "Berkeley" experience! :)
Doug has lived in Berlin and has traveled extensively throughout Western and Eastern Europe. Doug is a native Phoenician and after completing his degree at Berkeley, he and his partner of 8+ years returned to the Valley of the Sun. Doug now heads undergraduate advising in the School of International Letters and Cultures, teaches student success courses, freshman seminars, and coordinates language testing. In addition to his advising and teaching responsibilities, Doug manages undergraduate scholarships for SILC. Doug was elected to a 3 year appointment to serve on the General Studies Council (2008-2011) by his advising colleagues and sits on the Humanities/Fine Arts (HU) subcommittee.
Doug enjoys working with students from various backgrounds. He is an LGBTQ Ally and Facilitator, and his advising office is a designated SafeZONE.
Doug enjoys cycling, teaching, and learning about the diverse lives his students have led. Above all else, Doug and his partner are proud parents to their beautiful son, Miles. :)
