Frequently Asked Questions
Information regarding our
current research opportunities is posted
and updated regularly. If you or any of your children qualify you may
contact us to find out more information and/or
schedule an appointment. If you would like to be notified when you or your
children qualify for a study, you may have your contact information (as well
as any current hearing tests, and some demographic information) added to our
Research Subjects Database.
You may inquire about a study by phone or e-mail.
If someone is not available to take your call, please feel free to leave a
voice message.
If you would like to be notified when you or your children qualify for a
study, you may have your contact information (as well as any current hearing

Research Subjects Database.
Most studies include a standard hearing test. After that, tests vary widely
from study to study but all are hearing related. Testing may focus on
vocabulary, memory, speech
perception, effort, or preference. You can be
sure that the specific tasks required will be described to you before you
decide to participate.
Most testing takes 1 to 2 hours. Testing involving children never lasts more
than 2 hours in any one visit. Occasionally, studies require multiple visits
but most studies last just
one session.
Children and adults are currently paid $10 an hour or part hour. Children
are always paid in cash at the end of the session.
An adult (parent,
guardian) will be asked to sign a receipt for the cash.
Yes. The hearing tests are standard audiometric evaluations that are
administered at no charge to you. In addition to any copies you would like,
we are happy to send them to your child’s doctor or audiologist.
All testing is conducted by doctoral students in the Audiology program at
ASU under the supervision of Andrea Pittman, Ph.D., CCC-A. Dr. Pittman is a
licensed and certified clinical audiologist.
No. The hearing tests administered as part of a research study are provided
at no charge. If your child does not qualify for a study but you would like
to schedule a hearing evaluation, you are welcome to contact the
ASU Speech and Hearing Clinic.
Occasionally, minor problems with hearing aids can be addressed during the
course of a study. If a child requires additional clinical services (e.g.,
new ear mold, hearing aid adjustment or repair) from the ASU Speech and
Hearing Clinic, services can be coordinated with those received in the lab.
Unfortunately, we are not able to provide extra services to children who are
not seen at the Speech and Hearing Clinic.
Maps and directions to the lab are provided at
Location and Contact Information.
Parking during your visit will be arranged when the appointment is scheduled. Typically, a Research Assistant will meet you in the parking area and direct you to a parking space. A map to the parking area can be found at Location and
Contact Information.
