     Dr. Spahr was born and raised in rural Nebraska . After completing high school, Dr. Spahr joined the Navy and spent three years traveling the oceans of the world. In 1992 he found dry land in Arizona and spent several years working with adults and children with developmental disorders and attending Arizona State University .

    Dr. Spahr received his Ph.D. in Speech and Hearing Science in 2004 from Arizona State University . He has authored or co-authored publications on development and plasticity of the auditory pathways in humans, combined acoustic and electric hearing in cochlear implants and speech perception by patients fit with cochlear implants. Dr. Spahr is currently involved in several projects related to improving speech perception and sound quality for cochlear implant patients. His work has been funded by both the National Institutes of Health and private industry.
