Bilingual Emphasis Program (BEP)
The BEP is designed for Master’s students who are bilingual with a focus on Spanish-English
- Students who speak other languages may take some of the courses
- Depending on the students’ Spanish language proficiency, they will participate in bilingual clinical internships with supervisors who are bilingual in school and hospital settings
Bilingual Clinical Certificate
- This certificate will be awarded after successful completion of the two BEP courses, a bilingual clinical internship, and the Spanish language proficiency exam given at ASU
- Native Spanish speakers do not have to take the exam if they can demonstrate oral and written language proficiency through previous schooling in Spanish and the discretion of the bilingual faculty
Cultural Competence Certificate
- This certificate is awarded to those students have done the BEP coursework, but do not have the language proficiency
BEP Courses
Students in the BEP take the same core courses as other Masters’ students. Their two electives will include
Spanish Language Acquisition - (Syllabus)
- Covers Spanish acquisition in monolinguals and bilinguals, in infants through adults. Further, the course covers bilingual education, literacy development, second language acquisition, and cultural characteristics and variations across cultures.
- Students must have working knowledge of Spanish
Bilingual Speech-Language Assessment and Intervention - (Syllabus)
- This course covers speech and language assessment and intervention in children and adults who are bilingual or speak a language other than English. This class emphasizes case studies, problem solving, and discussions of current cases.
UAQ Exchange Program
Exchange Program with Universidad Autónoma de Querétaro
- This program allows students from Mexico to spend a semester or two at ASU participating in classes, independent study with faculty in the SHS, or participating in research experiences
- This program also allows ASU students to spend 6 weeks in Mexico during their last summer of graduate school to immerse themselves in Spanish to gain confidence and higher proficiency in the language for professional purposes
- Students participate in half time clinical work and half time in advanced Spanish classes for professional purposes
Program criteria and activities for outgoing students. They must:
- Speak Spanish fluently (although can make mistakes)
- Have a passing grade in all clinical work, a graduate GPA of at least 3.0, and be ready to graduate
- Be recommended by a clinical or academic faculty member to the program based on exemplary professional behavior, cultural competence, and ability to adapt and learn in new environments
- Register for 6 credits of summer SHS courses and register with the Center for Global Education Services
- Participate in 12 hours a week of Spanish courses for professional purposes, including conversation, reading, and writing
- Participate in 12 hours a week of clinical experience at a school or intervention center
- Do a formal presentation of their choice to the school or center
