FIRST YEAR (101-102) OBJECTIVES

After completing the first-year course sequence (101-102), students will be able to use the target language to communicate minimally with learned material and formulaic utterances, ask and answer basic questions, initiate and respond to simple statements, and maintain limited face-to-face conversations about familiar topics.

Additionally, students should be able to meet limited practical writing needs by creating statements or questions that are within the structural (grammar) and lexical (vocabulary) parameters of the course syllabus.

Communicative functions covered in the course include: talking about likes and dislikes; describing friends and family members; providing background information (name, date of birth, address, etc.); narrating daily and past activities; requesting directions, food, and lodging; discussing health, physical conditions, and survival needs; expressing opinions; and making travel arrangements.

LANGUAGE PROGRAM ATTENDANCE POLICY

This is a four credit hour course with a mandatory computer lab component. Be aware that the summer schedule is very rigorous, and that attendance is necessary for successful completion of the course. Expect to spend at least one hour on out-of-class preparation for each hour in class. Attendance is necessary to facilitate language acquisition. Understand that failure to attend class on a regular basis will increase exponentially the level of difficulty of the course work. Students are permitted a total of two (2) class hours (120 minutes) of unexcused absences. Absences beyond the permitted 2 hours will result in a substantial reduction from your weekly oral performance grade.

For the sake of your GPA, commit to completing the course now and arrange your schedule as necessary.

SPA 101/102 SUMMER COURSE DESCRIPTION

1. Daily Oral Performance (weekly grade): Your daily oral performance, preparation and participation in class activities will constitute 20% of your final grade. This grade is based on the quality of your in-class participation as judged by the instructor. As such, you will receive on every Monday a grade for the preceding week's work. Questions regarding weekly grades should be addressed to the instructor during office hours (or before/after class), where more detailed feedback and suggestions can be offered. SEEK HELP AS THE NEED ARISES. DO NOT PROCRASTINATE!

2. Chapter Exams: During summer sessions, you should expect three exams (see the course schedule for dates). Exams will emphasize information covered in class/lab, in addition to assignments from the text. Exams will comprise several sections designed to assess listening and reading comprehension, control of vocabulary and grammar, and writing proficiency. NO MAKE-UP EXAMS WILL BE GIVEN. (30%)

3. Midterm Oral Interview: A face-to-face, one-on-one oral interview will be administered at midterm to assess oral proficiency in Spanish, the primary objective of the first-year course sequence. (10%)

4. Final Written Exam: This departmental, standardized exam is designed to assess listening and reading proficiency in Spanish, as well as achievement-mastery of grammar and vocabulary covered in the course. Exam dates are listed on the course schedule. ALL STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO TAKE DEPARTMENTAL EXAMS AS SCHEDULED. NO MAKE-UP EXAMS WILL BE GIVEN! (15%)

5. Final Exit Interview: A face-to-face, one-on-one oral interview will be administered at the completion of the course to assess oral proficiency in Spanish. (comprehensive) (15%)

6. Compositions (3): Each student will write and submit three (3) formal compositions during the session. The first draft of each will be written after each Lesson Exam. Errors will be pointed out by the instructor and a second draft will be written either in the assigned computer lab session (time permitting) or outside of class. Exact due dates will be announced in advance. At the top of each composition, please include your name, date, and the number of the composition (1, 2, or 3). ( 5%)

7. Homework: The instructor will write assignments for the following day on the board each day before class begins. You are responsible for the completion of all assigned work, including workbook, textbook, reading and listening activities. Your ability to participate effectively in class activities will depend on your careful preparation of these assignments which will be evaluated through both the homework and the daily oral performance grades. Careful and thorough preparation of all assigned grammar explanations, taped listening passages, readings, and other exercises is essential. Plan to spend at least 1-2 hours on out-of-class preparation for each hour spent in class. (5%)
